And 'CS' behind the engine number (crank / pistons were hand sorted and balanced).

ebay item 160460361311 has the half leather similar to the SE on this thread and that is a normal S4 confirming your statement.

Look at how the G28 '12' was configured into a '55' by hand!

Started looking at the hi res versions and it occured to me that my Nikon produces .NEF raw files. I am not certain if this is the same as .RAW. I can convert .NEF to .RAW but haven't found a viewer to check the results.
Alternativley can send the hi res jpg of the original.

Phil-
That pic of your tranny case stamping is interesting- looks like it had been stamped as a G28/12 and then overstamped as a G28/55. Not a big deal since it matches the G28/55 on the options sticker. I find all sorts of date codes on the GTS that are 3-4 years older than the build date of my '93 GTS, the factory clearly just used what they had lying around at the time...

Good question is is it actually G28/55 or just restamped 12, meaning whats inside. One way to solve this is to look casting month of the casing. It has to make sense for factory stamping change to be possible. Fact that option sticker has 55 makes it plausable.

also looks like the serial number in the other pic has been stamped over with another one.
i like to think 928's were the last of the "hand built by men in white coats" Porsche's
i am changing the g/box oil tonight,is there an actual date stamped on the box somewhere i.e 06/88?

2 last questions and i will leave you all in peace.
1) below pic is gearbox drain plug, what is the part that should not be there.
2)could the kind Vilhuer supply a breakdown of the number of SE's by colour.
cheers
Phil

That is the shifter centering spring. I believe there are 2, the trans has to come down to get at it through the top. It doesn't affect anything except keeping the shifter centered between 2 and 3.
A good thing to do is not leave the car in 1st gear when you park it, just use the E brake.

That is reverse lockout spring. It forces selector from 1st to 2nd instead of reverse. System works ok without it when car is stationary but might not work on the move. Selector centering spring is more complex and larger setup.
AFAIK no one has SE color split. It can't be found from online PET. It contains only engine and gearbox type and option code, not color and interior info.
