Hi there,
just now I received a recall from my contact at Porsche Stuttgart; Fact is, Zuffenhausen NEVER fit any SE nor Sport label to the car. It was ONLY done by the UK-Importer.
They tried to get any information from there, but even they cannot provide it, because there is NO CODE. So Porsche itself concludes, that ORIGINAL WOULD MEAN NO LETTERING (instaed of the 'Clubsport' lettering on the left front wing of the LHD Clubsport).
Official were made 122 Clubsports + 6 prototypes in 1987.

that material has been an option on all cars not ordered with full leather, however, it became quite rare, cause most customers ordered leather.
Cheers

I think if the official importer put the stickers on all the cars, that makes them original in my book!
And the seat material is unique to the SE as I understand it - the CS had different material

Now all this begins to make more sense. Granted, the decals shown in the later pictures looked much nicer than the original ones - the decals themselves, and the arrangement with the 928S4 lettering just didn't look like something that would come out of Weissach (design) and Zuffenhausen (production).
Strange style, busy arrangement, etc... but it's a differentiator for those who own a such car, and therefore has its value.

Real production model numbers made are much smaller.
7 made '89 MY VIN's were within normal S4 VIN set:
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840087
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840188
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840430
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840486
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840511
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840540
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840991
Obviously Porsche has wrong data in PET. But some CS have S4 gearbox in reality and very likely some SE also. All 42 would need to be confirmed one by one to get real figures.
Code:
MY Model Market Smallest VIN Largest VIN Qty -------------------------------------------------------- 88 928 CS ROW WP0ZZZ92ZJS845061 - 845070 10 928 CS USA+CAN WP0JB092_JS865061 - 865062 2
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840087
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840188
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840430
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840486
WP0ZZZ92ZKS840511

Yeah, sorry for that typo. However, sadly - or luckily, depending whether you ask or bid - I can't fully confirm that low number. Porsche is not providing any VINs from '89, probably there were some more...
I know, that time, they re-fitted some CS and sold as S4 manual, cause nobody wants to buy the 'naked' CS... Probably, we can say, in general less than 30 should be close...
Problem is, you can't identify those cars very well if they're not in original condition: Without central locking, s/roof, reduced toolkit (okay, that 'extra' might have many old sharks
), smaller battery + alternator, smaller A/C compressor, one less bearing in the transaxle. And 'CS' behind the engine number (crank / pistons were hand sorted and balanced).
A grey one has been for selling last year close to me, it was sold for 40k EUR.
