Spoke too soon - anybody have a window motor?
I just posted and boasted that I had dismantled, and regreased my window motor. Well, it works, but is incredibly noisy. The motor part seemed to be fine, and nicely quiet when it was tested on its own. Its the geabox that is making an almighty noise.
I'm not sure if its the bearing on the end of the motor shaft, inside the gearbox (which seemed worn and rusty) or the rotating gear, but it certainly wants to be noticed.
I can live with it, almost, but if anybody has a nice one available and is willing to ship to Norway, please get in touch. I haven't put the door card on yet, so might just wait around for a new speaker and a new motor.
Its for a 1980 Euro S.
Thanks

Are you sure it's aligned correctly? The regulator may be binding causing the excess noise throught the transmission. If the motor works nice and quiet on the bench, then something else is going on, and another motor won't fix it.

Hmm ... I'm pretty sure its aligned ok. I think it is just wear somewhere in the gearbox when put under load. There seemed to be a lot of play in the bearing inside the gearbox.
How would I check for alignment and adjust for it?
I want to replace the motor and gearbox together. I think it is so worn.

Thanks Roger, thats a very good price for a new one. I would prefer a good used one (ie cheaper), but might just take you up on that. Give me a few days to think about it.

Are you sure? Thats cool if its true.
Sounds a bit strange to me that a 10 tooth gear is a straight swap for an 8 tooth one without having to change the mechanism too (i.e. the corresponding arc gear on the regulator).
I need a bit more convincing - its the Scandinavian skepticism to all things illogical welling up in me :-)

The number of teeth are different, but the toothed arc they drive is the same (I think). The motor and gearbox otherwise are identical. In other words, all you change is the drive ratio and the resultant speed with which the window goes up and down, and of course the effective gear ratio. Thanks to Chris (Landseer) I went through this earlier this year repairing a window and had a chance to compare the 8 and 10 tooth units, which appeared to be completely identical. I could certainly be wrong and if so welcome correction, but I think it is worth a try.

Mine also sounded like I was grinding rocks in it and tried everything possible to fix it(other than new gear box) finaly gave up and bought a new one. Never more happy in my life not to have to open up the door every couple of months or so to work on that stupid motor. Nice and quite and smooth.

Roger,
Great price for the 8-tooth window motor.
I'm pretty sure the 10-tooth is alot more but curious as to how much?
Knowing if the 8-tooth is forward compatible could be very interesting to folks looking for a cheaper alternative.
This is one of those items I would buy new if under $100. Just too much time involved to replace... to have it go out a year later.
I was fortunate to get one of the last 10-tooth ones for under $100 from that Arizona company.
