Some countries got inertia-reel shoulder belts much earlier.. Australia had them as standard factory fitment in 84.

All 928's from 84 onwards have the same fittings for rear belts on the chassis, so you can replace your lap only belts with 3-point retracting shoulder ones.

Its not hard to fit them.. just have to carefully cut a hole over the threaded hole for the hatch mounting of the shoulder belt (you can feel it's location, so no guesswork), and then pull out the rear console, rear seats, side bolsters, and fit the longer belts.

Takes a couple of hours to do (took me much longer the first time).

If you are thinking about your kid a '88 or '89 might be a good choice. You have shoulder straps in the rear and no air bag in the front which means you can put your kid there too. My kids greatly prefer riding up front.

Frontal airbags on the 928 are only useful if you don't wear a seatbelt.

I am thinking hard about putting an offer on this car. It is a little more then I wanted to spend but think it is mostly what I am looking for. Has anyone from here viewed this car in person and does anyone have any opinions what I should offer.

She's a beaut alright!! 3300 miles in 3 years is pretty minimal and may lead to some problems typically associated with cars that sit too much.

Seller probably wants $18k - $18,500 for it.

Airbags can be deadly if you don't wear a seatbelt. You will hit the airbag and slide under it and get jammed into the footwell.

The seatbelt/airbag combination is the safest way to go. You can put kids in the front seat with airbags. Note I said Kids, not Babies. You must be sure they have their seatbelt on and are sitting so they are normally positioned in the seat belt. Keeps the shoulder belt off the neck. Booster seats help with this.

I was involved in a head on accident at 60 mph. I had airbag/seatbelt combination. Was driving a 94 Honda Civic Si hatchback. Other driver was in 94 Ford Taurus. She didn't have a seat belt. We hit my driver front, to her passenger front, she came into my lane and tried to turn away. My skidmarks were only 20' long.

She hit the airbag and slid under it (called submarining by the car guys) and ended up wrecking both her knees. I got out and walked away. My car was totaled. The impact was hard enough to kink my roof. I bent the steering wheel with my wrists over and had a little scuff on my nose from the airbag. Very, very faint bruise from the seat belt. Didn't even break my sunglasses which ended up on the dash.

Please always wear your seatbelt if you have airbags. They are designed to work together.

I would look at the car in person to confirm mileage and condition. When spending top dollar it's worth verifying everything.

Only thing that looks out of place on that car is the carpeting which seems bunched up due to the wrong type of cleaning method.

Hard to say for sure but there seems to be some evidence of corrosion on the hardware in the engine bay usually caused by winter use. Worth looking into and getting more detailed pics of the engine and undercarriage.

Plenty of people have walked away from major front end collision with seat belts only. Seat belts do 90% of the work... airbags add a little... more so with the new side impact variety.

My dad designed airbag sensors in the early 70's for GM. I remember him saying that the government was forcing these ideas in on them and that they really weren’t that good. They give people a false sense of security so they don't buckle up. It took a good 15 years to get then rolling and another 10 or 15 to get them somewhat perfected.

Deployed airbags can also mean the difference between salvable and totaled, but typically if the impact was great enough to pop the bags… you wouldn’t want the rebuilt vehicle anyhow.

Back on topic… that black S4 5 speed in Michigan looks like a great find for 50,000 feet.

Hi Marine Blue,
I would love to buy your car, it is beautiful. I have admired it and all the pics on Ebay. I just cannot justify having a car like that and only driving it maybe 200 miles a year. Good luck with your sale.

Hi Ray,

I totally understand, my car isn't for everyone as I myself have also discovered after owning it for the last two years . I've driven it about 2000 miles/year and personally I think that is too much for this car. 1500 is ideal to keep mileage low and maintain the show condition.

The car in MI looks nice, just make sure you do your due diligence as noted earlier.

Like I said, it's hard to be certain but it appears the bolts holding the cross brace and a few of the cad plated parts at the end of the hoses have corrosion on them. Getting some closer shots of the engine or a shot of the undercarriage will confirm if I'm right or wrong.

Worth checking as these cars don't like salted roads!

Razor928,

If you are looking for a 5 speed, don't discount the '89 S4 manual transmission cars. They have a bit lower numerical rear axle ratio for a bit slower engine speed at cruising. (the european 2.64 vs the GT's 2.73) They do have the rear lap/shoulder belts, no air bags (D or P). With a chip, they'll give essentially the same horsepower as the GT , and a rev limit of ~6800. (And adding an X pipe may exceed stock GT). Also, they sell for less, as they don't have the GT "aura". There were about the same number of S4 manuals and GT's made in 1989.

Gary Knox ('89 S4 manual track car)

3-point belts in the rear were standard from MY88 on.

That low mileage black S4 on eBay is awesome! Same color combo as my first 928, just in even better condition.

I would not sell my 91 for $16k, even though it has 105k miles now and is not 100% perfect cosmetically anymore.

Don't be impatient - waiting for the right car can be a real plus. It took me 3 years to find my GTS. Looked at lots of 928s - paid good money on travel, inspections - lots of problem cars, lots of so-so cars, some nice weird colored cars - was frustrating. But held out for what I was really looking for...

Over time I rasied my sights to looking for a GTS Vs an S4/GT having figured out I wanted to do this only once.. No regrets.

Alan
