Just my $0.02. I searched long and hard for the right car. I was really nervous about buying a 928 (my first Porsche) after my dad's cost / upkeep $$ that got him out of Porsche's in the 80s and into Zs.
Honestly service history is golden when it comes to buying these cars and without a service history I would have never purchased one. Its one thing to get an air-cooled SC or 3.2 Carrera. But there is way too much that can go wrong on a 928 without knowing exactly what you are buying.
For me it was worth paying top dollar for a car that the previous owner had fully sorted out. Also, if you find the right car, don't rule out traveling to get it. Mine was 800 miles away, but it made for a great drive home. Good luck. They are wonderful cars. Mine is my daily driver and I get comments and questions about it all the time. Kids wonder what it is and old guys love to talk about how they drooled over them in the 80s.

I would only suggest spending everything-but-$2k on a well-known Rennlister's car that others have complimented and that you can learn about by the seller's post history.
I looked for a car fro two full years before finding my ideal car from a five-Porsche owner, and I still had to pour money into it.
Good luck!!

w/o documented history that is way high. There are better deals around, enough cheaper to afford shipping and still have $$ in reserve for deferred maint. There is an '87 5-speed near Scranton, PA for a BIN of 8,500 (ebay). The seller sounds upfront, but alas, not much history provided and not an area where a PPI is handy; maybe he will more forthcoming if you contact him. Andrew's would be a something you could depend on. Not much easier to get to for you, but he is a knowledgable and dependable owner here.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Thank you for all the info. I will pass on the White one and find exactly what I am looking for.
My ultimate 928 would be Silver with Black interior and a 5 speed. I have been looking long and hard for a 91 but have not come accross her yet. This will not be a daily driver it will be my hobby. I am not on a tight budget so when I do find the right car it will be taken care of the right way.

If you are thinking you want a 5 speed, don't look at automatics... you'll probably always regret it if you do. I have and automatic, always wished it where a 5 speed, but has grown on me significantly.
Probably best to set you priorities… some thing like this (adjust as needed):
5 speed, must have… don’t even think of others
Silver, really want, but maybe color x or y if in great shape
Ideally 91, but also would take an 89 or 90 (or maybe any 87+)
Interior color… any thing but x or y
Warning! 928’s can become very addictive. Oh yeah, last step let everyone around here know what you are looking for and leads will come out of the wood work.

Definitely hold out for the car you want, not the car you want to buy! Good luck!

Love the silver and black combo like my 88, alas it is an auto but has LSD, lumbar, heated seats, extended hub and extended center console.
Are there times I wished it was a 5 spd, sure, driving to and from SITM. But as a DD in traffic the auto is great, cans shift it as I please anyway. Have had the car for 8 years and have done all the maintenance myself.
Getting ready to put the 89 LSD, new Boge's and Eibach's on along with Constantines clamp and bearings. The car will be pretty much set and runs great. I sold my Jag XJ6 DD as I wasn't going to give this car away with all the work it has had. Wish the Strosek was as sorted, just time and money!
Good luck on your purchase.
Cheers,

The only reason for wanting the 91 is the airbags and rear shoulder straps for my little girl that is 928 crazy as I am.
I can afford to pay more for the right car, it is just finding it as I want it soon. I have been looking daily.
Thanks for everyones help. When the right one comes available I will ask for input on the decision.

Ok great that opens a few more doors. Second choice would be Red Exterior with Tan Interior. I am located in Vancouver so anything on the West Coast would work but I can travel anywhere to view and have shipped back.

Actually I think the rear seat belt shoulder straps may have been a late 87 addition. I know early 87 for sure don't have them.
I'm thinking that and the reflective round dots on the door openers were added at the same time. What about the roof antenna, does your 88 have that?
Airbags for sure weren’t added until 90.

My 87 doesn't have shoulder belts in the back seats, but has the dots on the inside door pulls. The last of the vin# 2302
