Thunderhill July 2010 Race - SCCA ITE-SuperUnlimited-etc
Well, we have near 5% of the field covered in 928s. Scot and I will both be racing this next July 24-25th at Thunderhill.
should be an awesome field, as this weekend we are racing with the GT1-2 and Superunlimited classes (combined group 1 and 3). it makes for a shorter weekend, as its only saturday and sunday, but more times on the track per day.
Scot hasnt raced since last season, but his car has. (he he he) and the Holbert replacement racer is all set from its outing at laguna last month running equal tiimes to the previous platform.
I saw the field and it looks like some good comp. even Brian's friend Dean will be there in his turbocharged miata, as well as the usual gang of ITE'ers. (the 600hp S2000, NSX, MUSTANG, along with the vipers, Panos, and many others.)
Due to budget constraints, we are only running Sunday races. Sunday race time is at 1PM if anyone is in the neighborhood.

That sucks! I think Im milking all I can out of the new car and the old, on really good tires and I dont think there is a 1:58 in it. I've only hit the high 1:59s. Maybe 1:58 high, but it will be a little scary. Ill surely give it a shot. plus, you never know, its a different day, hot temps, unknown track conditions, winds, etc. I ran 2:01s with no wings, splitter, 50-100 extra lbs and crummy tires. Ill see if what I run on the crummy tires for qual (just to see what the splitter and wing are really worth) and then go after it in the race.
what kind of power does it have? I heard something like 330 at the rear wheels, and only weighing about 2400lbs? true?
well, there will be a bunch of cars to be careful with, having all the GT1, and SP cars in our group as well as the tube frame mazda Rx7s spec racers. There are about 5 of them, 2 are really fast 1:56ish range and the others are more like 2:00 cars.
should be fun.

just checked the updated list. Kip is showing up with his WC GT NSX, but brian, it looks like your buddy with the high powered miata has pulled his entry. Now, for the first time in 8 years, im thinking of NOT going, however it might be fun running with the unlimited GT1 guys as well. hmmm.
If I can get into the POC Laguna race for one day, i might bag it unless (correction)_ DEAN , is going.

Race day went great. great field, lots of close racing with the GT2, and tubed frame N3 racers.
qualifying was on the toyos I used on the thunderhil debut of the black car, with no wing splitters. (2:01.0 then) . with the aero, 1:59.6, matching my fastest time on the A hoosiers. put on the A hoosiers for the race, and ran 1:59.2, but the 100degree afternoon temps took about 2 seconds off everyones time, so who knows what the hoosiers are really worth. Im stil giving them less than 1 second.
anway, got jumped at the start, as our row got messed up with the nascar cutting off the viper one place ahead of me, before turn 1. 3 of in the inside rows, had to lock up, the back of the field (10 of us within 1-2 seconds of eachother), ran buy down the middle . anyway, it took most of the race to find my grid spot and maybe 1 more . 4th which is fine considering the field. video to come.
with the temps so hot, i was getting some real hot oil temps 260F, and the oil pressure was dipping in the 3-4 bar on the 75mph hairpin, which I havent seen before. (about mid race) anway, it survived.
The best part of the weekend besides hanging with the kids, and having a best lap tme, was proof that my intermedate clutch fix works!
pics coming up soon.

perfect looking plugs, pulled after the all out race, with barely a cool down lap. sure look a lot cleaner and tan vs the black and crust they get during the street driving.

Sounds like you had a ball! Should be interesting to see what happens when the temps drop to better race conditions.
Do you run anything special for 928 oil issue, ie drilled crank or a dry sump?
Congratulations on a safe weekend and the new race car!
