Default Need new odometer

My odometer stopped working recently. The repair shop is telling me that the brown/orange gear on the back of the speedo head unit is completely striped. Is there a repair kit available or will I need to buy a new speedo unit? The speedometer works fine, just the odometer has stopped working. Any thoughts are appreciated.

you can buy a new gear for about 25.00 then either install it yourself, its a bit tricky.
or pay the man to install one .
Usually about a 3 hour job for a shop,
but if your proficient it can take 45 mins

Is the gear available through the dealer?

Use the search function and you will find where they are available. It's a common problem.

Yea, 45 minutes to take the pod out, get the needles off, take the speedometer off, take it apart, clean all the little bits out, inspect it and then replace the gear and put it all back together.

I have done several of them, I wish I was half a fast as you were.

Good time to replace/upgrade your cluster bulbs too.

There is a great write-up by Dwayne on how to do this, and the gear is readily available. Check out http://www.dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/

I replaced mine and it stopped working again shortly. I redid the work and also put some thin washers between each number to shim it and keep proper spacing. It has worked flawlessly since then, almost a year.

I am getting ready to do mine (I have actually been putting it off for a while now). What washers did you put in?? Just the thinnest that you could find?? Also, any idea why it was necessary to put in shims?

Thanks, Paul

Yep, the shimming is very important, otherwise the gears separate, slip, and wear. Anything washer-like can be used for a shim, just needs to fit.

general question - will this gear strip if the trip reset button is reset while moving?

Nope, if it is that weak it is going to fail any way.
