Hack Attack Gums Up Authorize.Net

Hackers have crippled one of the internet's biggest credit card processors, and tens of thousands of online merchants are losing business while the company struggles to recover.

Since last Wednesday, Authorize.Net has been relentlessly pounded by distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attacks. The massive, coordinated waves of internet traffic have repeatedly overwhelmed the company's servers. Authorize.Net's customers have had to improvise: Some are confirming their credit card orders over the phone, others have gone with little or no sales for nearly a week.

"I'm losing four grand a day in revenue," said David Hoekje, president of PartsGuy.com, an online heating and air conditioning parts dealer. "My year is a bell curve, and we're on the upwards slope now. This is 5 percent of my year, gone."

As of Tuesday afternoon, there still seemed to be no end in sight to the hacker strikes against Authorize.Net. Security experts say that there's little a company can do to defend itself against these kinds of attacks.

But company officials insist they're trying. "We're actively trying to deal with it. And we're working hard to minimize the disruptions to our merchants," Authorize.Net marketing director David Schwartz said. The company has turned to the FBI, as well as outside consultants, for help, he added......................

Think I will switch to them ASAP and stop using the system that has yielded a 100% secure and successful solution for over 10 years.....and I will do it just because you say so....BUT only if I can borrow your aluminum foil hat :-)

Seriously, no system is 100% secure, trust me if the right people want information they will get it. When China wanted Google's info, they took it, simple as that.

The bottom line for me is the less people I don't know or trust having access to the information the better I feel about it.

Geez. Seem to have struck a nerve. Not my intent.

No ecommerce expert would ever disagree that a proper gateway is more secure than your 1998 method. It's just the way it is. And I'm only trying to share my experience. I'm sure you're very good at what you do, but ecommerce is all I do and I would guess that on my busiest days I do a higher volume of transactions than your site does in an entire year. I know at least a little about what I'm talking about.

Point is moot anyway. PCI DSS will, quicker than you would imagine, mandate that you begin using a secure gateway. It's just the way it is. You might trust "Jeannie", but the CC companies probably don't.

Again, I wasn't trying to strike any nerves and I apologize if I did.

PS: Your clip had nothing to do with data security.

They are skewed. For your site, your numbers should be within a couple percentage points of this:

1. Internet Explorer 60.5%
2. Firefox 21.50%
3. Safari 13%
4. Chrome 4% (this one may vary slightly more)
5. The rest 1%

What you're seeing is users switching to IE because of the site navigation issue discussed in this thtread. But they're not all switching and that is costing you sales. You've got an easy 10% bump in conversions waiting for you.

You have a 928Rus on your sig and say 928'sRus is the answer to some one who has a problem navigating a web page.

Yea Jeez.

I buy from both, you say you do, but my guess is that that really is not the case.

Guess what, I can buy parts from the same places they do for pretty close to what they pay for them, for the most part, but I don't buy 928 parts from their suppliers so they both can stay in operation.

I also have bought non 928 parts from both of them, granted not much, but this is going to change, I will buy more of other parts from them in the future if possible and some what in line with what I get them for and make a profit.

You people who seem, at least from my stand point, of trying to put 928SP out of work make me sick.

You got something to say, say it, but don't say it and then when some one calls you on it say, I am just kidding.
I am not going to believe that.

Roger, David, Jeannie, or anybody else for that matter, you all know where to contact me if there is any problem with what I have said.
