however -- it seems like, when i have a premonition, i would like to talk myself into the idea that it very often comes true... so i let this outrageous thought stand.
ten minutes later, a 928 (GTS no less) pulled onto the highway. we exchanged waves, then hauled a little *** for about 40 miles...

I've only seen 3 in Tampa in 15 years...a gray DP in rough shape that a neighbor has, a beat to hell green S that parked near my office sometimes, and a nice black GTS on Dale Mabry one morning.

I'm now seeing a bazillion of them. The most notable being my barn find.
About four weeks after I brought my '85 home, I run into a rennlister at the parking lot of my local shoprite with a supercharged '85. A month later, on the drive into work, I spotted a blue 928s with a dented driver's side front fender. A couple of weeks later, I ran into another black 928s pulling off of route 8 while I was at a stoplight waiting to get on the highway. I was on my way to work and passed a gaggle of Boston 928s on the way to SITM while I was on my way to work in my Camry
. Three weeks ago, I spotted what I think was a black 928gt in New Milford parked next to a white 944. Finally, this weekend, I spotted a red S4 at the beach where I live. Of course, right after that, I ran into a really nice black '82 (competition package?) 928 while doing a Cars & Coffee at F40 Motorsports. I'm not sure if the last one would count as a random sighting.

I see one or two a year around here in the Seattle area.
It's usually quite the event. I come home all excited to tell the wife and kids. They usually look at me and try to act interested and say something along the lines of "that's nice honey".

Yesterday at the PCA breakfast in Richmond, a couple of Cayman owners said they were surprised to see the 928's show up. Very rare sighting. They never see them on the road either.
Jadz928 brought the perl white S4. I had the red euro-fendered 84. They definitely got some attention.

I saw a red 928 S about a week before I bought my 82 back in April here in Va Beach. Haven't seen one since.
My car is becoming quite well known. People I know say "Hey, I saw you eating a hotdog at 7/11 yesterday", or "I saw you at Smokies again last night", on and on.
I get made fun of once in a while. "Hey, dude, do you listen to Bob Seger and dance around in your underwear?"
"Do you do backward donuts in parking lots?"
"How's Risky Business doing?"
"You got Bob Seger's greatest hits in your CD player?"
One time a cop gave me a thumbs-up.

VERY rarely. But I sure do my best to wave and such to them. I know others don't see them much because so many people start conversations with me about my car and how they never see them....

I see about one per month here in Sydney. Less frequently when I lived in London.
The strangest tale of random sightings .....
Back in 2004 the day before the 928UK gathering at Beaulieu motor museum (approx 125 928s) About 20 928s drove in convoy to visit a small company that makes replica 356's. On route we passed close to a USAF base. What did we see coming in the opposite direction - A left hand drive 928 wearing US (forces overseas ?) plates. I was near the end of the line of 20 928s and boy that guys eyes were wide as he passed me. Can imagine his thoughts ...WTF you don't see a 928 from one month to the next then I go for a drive on saturday morning and see 20 all in line.

Except when attending 928 social or club events I never see them at all. I remember them back in the early 90's in and around Los Angeles and Orange County but not a one since then. Heck I rarely see my own.

Dan--
Future for you is multiple sightings in rare colors... Right in your own garage!
We live in what was perhaps the 928's single largest market, yet sightings here are still a treat. At last month's end-of-month gathering in Woodland Hills, a grand total of ONE 928 showed up (that would be mine). Previously we'd seen one or two not in the travel group here. I'm guessing most are gathering dust in folks garages, all waiting for that big spike in market value that's scheduled to happen three days from whenever you ask. In the meanwhile, I drive mine regularly, and get very regular compliments. And comments about how folks never see them anymore. I tell folks that they should own one. since they are less than the cost of a Honda Civic to buy. They get scared when we start talking about the other costs of ownership though. A thousand dollars a set for tires, stuff like that. Oh well.
