'Clank' is bad, generally. I'm not sure I can feel much less hear the crank move during the endplay testing on mine.

Where are you in Cali? I have the dial indicator and the magnetic holder here if you need it. 134 intersection with the 2 freeway.

i think i just need to bring it somewhere for a professional to look at. because, yes, it moves about 1-1.5mm without me needing to pry on it...with an audible clank at each end. but the whole assembly is moving (flywheel, the other gear looking thing, the clamp are all moving together up and down the splines of the drive shaft). when i tighten up the clamp using the alan bolt, it doesn't move at all.

So did you get a pre purchase inspection when you bought this car?

The flywheel should not move up and down, get some one to test the end play for you, something does not sound right.

I think he means it's moving fore and aft on the splines.

I think taking it to a professional might be a good thing at this point.

How does it run?

i know i said up and down, but i meant forward and back. it's traveling on the drive shaft. but regardless, i guess that's bad.

and no, andrew. i didn't get a PPI. had i done so, i'm sure i wouldn't be in the predicament i find myself in now.

yeah. i think that's exactly what its doing. only when i loosen the clamp. aren't you supposed to test end play with the clamp loose?
Runs great. that's the pi$$er.

Since TBF os documented at below 0.020" it seems unlikely that you would have 1.5mm and no adverse effects. I too would also suggest getting a second opinion on your measurement. If you are close to (correction) Dr Bob I would take him up on the use of his dial indicator, and if not look for someone close that is familiar with the 928 to help you out.
Out of curiosity you mention that you are using a caliper to perform your measurement. What units does the caliper read in, and what was your actual measurement? Is it a dial, vernier or digital caliper?

We always unbolt the flex plate from the flywheel to test them, not that it matters most times.

yeah, i'll bring it somewhere for a professional opinion. either i'm messing something up, or the car is really f'd...or both.
btw - i'm using (for now) a vernier caliper which reads in cm and inches, but have a dial caliper coming to me on Thursday. So I'll test again then. i believe the measurements were, when pushed forward towards the block, 3 cm, and when pushed towards the rear, 2.85cm. A difference of .15 cm or 1.5 mm of play.

If there really is 1.5mm, it is going to be toast... I thinks... The clunk is your sign. Start looking for a motor, unfortunately.

I measure mine with the clamp very loose but I don't unbolt the flexplate since the flywheel moves very freely at that point. I get an audible "clunk" when I move the flywheel between fore and aft positions and I have never measured anything other than 0.008" (0.2mm) over the 10 years and 150K miles I have measured it, which is within the "new" spec. (according to the WSM "new" can be up to 0.312mm or 0.012").

Can you get pictures of the two measurements? If so some of us here may be able to look at how they where made and the resultant readings and may be able to offer sugestions on improved tech nique or verification of readings.

Bobbin88, where are you located? If within reasonable distance/time of LA, OC, of SF areas there are available expert resources nearby. I can toss the fixture and indicator in the car with some coveralls and lend a hand and a second pair of eyes (plus my half-a-brain...), for instance.
