The trick is, they're all TECHNICALLY worn the moment they rotate. They're just not worn past the point of utility.

I only did one and the inserts were tight. Hat to use a forklift to press in the shaft.

Unless the bearings have seized, why would these sleeves be worn out? The shaft should not normally rotate within the sleeve, right? I checked the shaft for play and eccentricity and it was well within the spec on the other S4 and my 89.

Understood.

Did not mean to dampen your enthusiasm on your TT rebuild.

Best,

Best,
No worries, I was just teasing you a bit! Everyone's always going to be skeptical because you have a vested interest in us replacing all these things for every rebuild. It's a good idea, but if I replaced every wear item I came across, I'd never get to drive my car.

Yeah, those bearings are gone - are there any other options rather than spending $75 with Jaeger? I understand the high cost of machine work, but if there's a less expensive route, I'm all ears.

Try to get yuor hands on a used set of bearings and re use the inserts. Maybe someone here, that upgraded to Constantine's bearings, has the old ones collecting dust.

I've had dozens of torque tubes rebuilt by 928 Interantional (I don't do them myself) and I've never had any problems with anything bearing related....I'm not sure what they are using for pieces, but it seems to work perfectly.

Constantine and I have talked several times (I think his Super Clamp is great), but I'm still waiting for a "need" to use his torque tube bearings.

Hi Greg,

Thought you were rebuilding them too.

Whenever the time comes and you use the SBs, then you'll get it.

Sorry for stepping on some toes.

Cheers,

Ordered the Jager bits - guess it's time to break out the PVC pipe again.

Thanks everyone, for your help figuring out what the problem was! If I wasn't bad enough about keeping everything, now I'll be even worse.

It'll probably be a little too late, but I made one of these inserts myself on a lathe at work. After turning some delrin in the right shape, I stopped the lathe and made some longitudinal grooves in the in- and outside by sliding the tool of the lathe along the surface at a respectively larger and smaller diameter. The big burr at the outside is larger in diameter and forms a press fit in the bearings and on the shaft. With some loctite, I glued the insert in the new bearing. It's been there for over 5000 km's now and still going strong...

Just my 2 cents...
