...., this is exactly the problem I had with mine..., new filter.., no noise.

My external pump drove me crazy with all that whining ... a couple hundred bucks with Roger and now it's blissfully quiet! Mine was the original, and I had already done the internal pump and filter, so I knew I was on borrowed time!

No internal on an 84 US car. Some of the hot climate cars did have them such as Australia.

Just replaced the fuel pump and filter yesterday. The drive to work this morning was pretty nice due to more power and less shaking. Next step is to send out the injectors. Tonight its new front sway bar bushings. What does everyone think about the GP sorensen injectors at autozone for 37.00 each. I may just get a set of those.

The whine on a fuel pump comes from to much pressure from blockage or dirty filter or system not from a bad fuel pump. These cars are expensive enough without needlessly replacing parts. If you want to check your fuel pump take it off hot wire off of battery (watch sparks and have fire extinguisher handy) put a hose from a can of gas to the inlet side off pump and run gas through it. If it is perfectly smooth and makes a consistent humming noise with less sound then it was on then it is perfectly fine. If you hear gear grinding noise it's bad.
