Default Fuel pump whine

Wondering if it is normal to be able to hear your fuel pump on these cars. From outside the car, I can only describe it as a buzzing sound that almost sounds like a vacuum leak. This is more noticable when the weather is hot.

It is normal to hear the pump in a quiet place. If yours seems louder than you expect, pull the cover from the pump and see if the pump or any of the lines or hoses are touching the tank or chassis. This will telegraph noise.

A partially plugged fuel filter will increase the pump buzz.

A little whine is normal, and it is a little louder when the pump is warm on all my cars.
Run some Marvels Mystery Oil in the gas and see if that quiets it down. My '78 and my old TBI Suburban both love that stuff. Improves throttle response, too.

my pump is loud as hell when HOT out. let it sit for a few, gets a little quieter... good fuel pressure, so i know pump is not bad.

It's not bad now, but healthy pumps don't whine loudly. Worn pumps also tend to quit abruptly. Mystery oil may help, for a while.

So one choice is to replace it now, the other would be to wait until it leaves you stranded somewhere and then replace it.

Are you feeling lucky?

Jim speaks from experience, so do I..............if the pump is original and its making a lot of noise replace it now.

A dead pump is a dead car and Murphy will have you in the boonies with no cell coverage on a dark and rainy night and the boogie man lurking.

Default not worth the risk

So true about a worn pump can stop abruptly.....Mine stopped when I was going 70mph in the middle lane of I77 in Charlotte. Luck for me, I was able to coast across one lane to the road side to call AAA for a tow. A new fuel pump and filter later, the 85 feels like it has the best pickup I've ever experienced.

Looks like its time for a new pump. Anyone have suggestions on places to get or pricing. Thanks, Bill.

I put a new 044 pump in the GTS and it whines like my 3 year old. Standing behind the car at idle it's louder than the exhaust. Need to find time to get back in there....

[hypothetical question] While I don't think this is the case for me since I just fixed the short hose on the internal pump, if the internal pump failed or partially blocked the line, would that cause the external pump to work harder and thus get louder? Or is a loud pump just a sign of impending external pump doom? [/hypothetical question]

I am also looking for a pump. Not sure what MY you have but here are two at $70-$80 with 1 year warranty.

This one looks like the wrong check valve configuration for a 1979, have a question into the company.

I ran a couple bottles of lucas in the tank, seems to run smooth since that. Makes sense, flaky fuel pump.
