S4 aftermarket muffler
Hello 928 folk,
Since my recent ownership of my 928, i had considered making a muffler for my car.
If i am able to create a good sounding muffler that will connect to our S4. I might entertain selling a few.
Is there a market for such an item? I would assume yes, but i thought get some others thoughts and ideas.
The muffler options would be under $300 bucks (which would include a chrome tips or tip) and i am betting it will have an outstanding sound. My friend who is a competent welder has made a muffler for an OB, so we might have an options for the OB 928's.
I thought i would ask and see. Of course it will take some time to develop such a product and i might need a ginny pig for the OB cars sometime down the road.
Thanks for viewing.

Are you talking about the rear muffler? If people like the sound, if it doesn't cost more than a RMB, and if it's light enough, I don't see why people wouldn't be interested.

Yes, the rear muffler. Its another options for those who had removed other parts of there exhaust system (cats and resonator) and now noticed their RMB is now to loud. Its just an idea, either way i am going to make a muffler and see what happen.
I know it will sound great, i made a set for my SHO a few years ago. I rec. several complements on my SHO v8 and a lot of folks thought it sounded like a Mustang. My neighbor used my car start up as a signal for him to get to work. LOL
While the RMB is very nice product, it does not give you the option to replace the muffler tips. The price will all depend on how much it will cost in material and welding. My only concern would be fitment for other cars. Its easy to make a car fit when its in your shop, but it needs to fit right out of the box.
Its all good. Thanks jpc

Ive always wanted a lighter alternative to the rear muffler also. I think Constantine had one made for his car..i have a picture of it somewhere?
I have an x pipe and the stock S4 mids and it would be nice throw on a muffler now and then for a change. The guys with the GT's woud benefit more from a noise stand point.

Something like this?
Stainless, bolt-on, made by a 928 workshop/vendor in the UK.
Sounds good with an X-pipe and large resonators.. haven't tried it on my '89 with small resonators yet.

All those years selling millions of dollars in 928 parts I do not recall a single person asking for a replacement rear S-4 muffler.....a few wanted a stock one but that was about it. Vast majority wanted the RMB or stock....And the factory rear muffler seems to last FOREVER !

If I ever have a need for another exhaust system, I want to work in a couple of these:
There's a flap valve that operates with exhaust pressure. When the load is low, the valve is closed and the muffler quiet. When the load is high, the valve opens and there's low restriction and it's loud.

Seems to me that people are looking for the early GT muffler, and the idea here is similar: Light, and some help with the sound when X+RMB starts getting old.

The muffler in Hilton's pic sounds great. An RMB is just too much in a built-up area if you have an x-pipe as well. And you have the drone problem.
I'm definitely in the market for one of these for my OB, but I'm probably just going to get a completely custom system made from the S3/86.5 manifolds back.

^--- he should know.. the car I got it with used to be his
The RMB/X-pipe combination gets you pulled over here by the police if you're lucky, or if you're not so lucky, by the EPA at one of their mobile check-points (Environment Agency issue a spot-fine, and a defect notice that requires visits to emissions centre, and full vehicle inspection at the local road authority.)
Something a little louder than the stock S4 rear muffler is good.. to add back the V8 woofle, but still enough silencing that at cruise, it doesn't draw unnecessary attention.

My 90 S4 has Carl's SS exhaust with a RMB and the sound is great. I can slide by the cops but will roar
when needed. There is a sound tract on U-tube from Sharks in Hell with lots of cars.
Good Luck

It has the same characteristics, which I like very much-- reasonably quiet at lower RPM's and lighter loads, without the "droning" and harshness of the x-pipe/RMB combination. It's fine for poking around town or on the highway. And when you put your foot in it and wind it up, it changes character completely and absolutely howls (and delivers the horsepower). No trick valves or anything, but I think that putting the mufflers in the middle of the system-- alongside the tranny-- is key to that characteristic.
I've messed a little with the exhaust on our S4. An RMB without an X is loud but sounds very nice. With the x-pipe (and hi-flow cats) it gets louder and more harsh sounding, and has a nasty drone on the highway-- not pleasant to our ears. I swapped the small resonators for large ones from an '86, that calmed it down a bit but didn't change the harsh tone or fix the drone. I then put the original S4 muffler back on, quite boring. I then "gutted" the S4 muffler (cut it open and removed the stuffing) which made a nice sound at lower RPM's (although quite a bit louder than the GT), and killed the drone, but very quiet at higher RPM's. Which is backwards for my taste, but that's where it is right now.
So I am following this with interest, but I am thinking that the key is the mufflers in the middle of the pipe, as Louie and Carl did. Then maybe a small muffler at the tailpipe or just pipes or the RMB. I think the resonance from muffler to tailpipe is an important element to the acoustics, and adding any sort of serious muffler (even a gutted one) near the tailpipe seems to kill that.
Good stuff, thanks!!

This is exactly what I am looking for - a smaller rear muffler, that looks stock and dampens the roar a bit ocmpared to the rmb.
I now have X, small cats, Carls mid section, RMB.
It is too loud, and the sound is too much like a rusted muffler.
With the factory rear muffler it is way too quiet.
I would like to keep the X, re-mount original large resonators mid section, and a small muffler at the rear.
If only someone would actually make and sell this muffler, it would be possible to try this.
