Default Owner's Manual Stuff

I was just browsing through my owner's manual tonight.

First of all, it's tiny! Compared to today's owners manuals, it's a pamphlet!

Things I either didn't know or didn't remember:

1. Tires must always remain on same side of vehicle! p. 84

2. You're supposed to regularly remove embedded material from the treads of your tires! p. 85. I do this on a daily basis.

3. Tires have a memory! p. 85. Who knew?

4. Mixed tires are not permissible! Achtung!! p. 85

5. Turn the engine off before you attempt any repairs on the vehicle! p. 8. OK then!

6. Never remove the key from the steering lock while you're driving the car. p. 12.

7. Duplicate wheel lock keys cannot be furnished by your Porsche dealer. p.13.

8. The alarm system also monitors the glove compartment. p. 14.

9. If the central locking system isn't working, the alarm system can still be armed by locking a door three times in rapid succession. p. 14.

10. If the central locking system fails to work, open and close the two doors individually then try it again. The alarm system can be armed by closing a door three times in rapid succession. p. 15.

11. When the ignition is turned off or the key removed, the power windows can still be operated until one door is opened. p. 17. (Can't figure out the reason for this.)

12. If the key is held in the locking position when locking a door, the sunroof and door windows will close automatically. I had forgotten this. 1993 is a pretty early year for such a feature in a car! p. 17.

13. I had forgotten that the rear window defog/defrost switch has two separate positions: If you simply turn it clockwise, it will provide constant but lower level energy for defogging. If you PUSH the button inward and THEN turn it clockwise, you'll get a higher energy level for defrosting, but it will turn off automatically in 15 minutes. I used to know this! D'oh. p. 45.

14. Does anyone actually use their one-sided parking lights when parked? p. 46

15. AHA! I suspect the occasional strange little clicks I sometimes hear behind the dash are the "servomotor-controlled air mixing valves which automatically mix the cold and warm air" in the HVAC! p. 50

16. When running the AC, cold air actually is blown into the glove compartment! p. 50

17. The air conditioner must be briefly switched on at least once a month to lubricate seals and bearings. I knew this. p. 51

****************

However, the owner's manual failed me on the two items that caused me to start browsing through it in the first place!

1. Where is the exact location in which the tow hook is inserted? I know it's through the grill, and I seem to recall that it's on the driver's side. There's no mention of it in the manual.

2. What is the purpose of the little wire thingy in the tool kit - the one with a circular loop on one end and a small hook on the other? Again, there's no mention of this item in the manual.

Anyone care to school me on these last two items?

There are 2 tow hook insertion points,
one above the rear license plaqte.
The front tow hook is on the right side of the grill area and its in the upper grill slit, as your seated in the car,
its covered by either a aluminum plug that will usually be seized or the updated plug its rubber.

The wire hook is to use for removal of the sunroof motor cover.
Lower the rear edge and then hook the wire inside and pull it towards you to disengage the cover from the spring wire

On #11 this feature lets you sit and enjoy your food or drink without leaving the engine running so you can pull up to the top of Immigration canyon and munch out and still be able to use your windows

Yes, it is brief compared to modern cars. Mind you, it doesnt havce any/many notes or Cautions about things like 'Injury may occur if you put parts of your body out the window and hit Close!' like my Suby book..
I have a tap for the tow hook thread clean up....20MM Knuckle thread, 8 tpi. Nice standardized specs. Used it on a couple of cars so far. The early ones are 15mm x 8tpi.
My Bridgestone tyres are NOT directional, so I can run them any side I want. Maybe they mean on the Outside?

IIRC the not switching tires is because they are also staggered and uni directional

Aha! That was mighty nice of Porsche to design something just for Immigration Canyon trips!!

So, by "right side" of the grille area, you mean the passenger side, correct?

Stan,

I thought the little wire hook (missing in most cars tool kits like mine) is for removing the centercaps from the wheels. (there are 2 holes in those centercaps) Maybe 2 uses?? S##t, now that I think about it, probably MULTIPLE uses!!

Bigs, yes to the right side question
Chuck I think your correct about the wire to be used on the center caps.
I may be wrong about the intended purpose of the wire but it can be used to unhook the spring wire on the cover.
I think a picture would be a good thing

Sniffing the pages of the owners manual? Having trouble letting go Bigs? :P

You do realise that you'll have to buy a spoiler-less OB on the rebound, right?

If you get an S4, you'll find yourself comparing it to your old GTS during the inevitable arguments about who's in control of your wallet.

I tell myself I'm just preparing myself to better orient the new owner.

Does that ring a little hollow to you too?

Bigs:

Just getting around to reading the manual?! I was going to suggest you add "RTFM" to your extensive new owner orientation document. When I bought my car I read it from cover to cover when I stopped for lunch on my way home. I was so glad I learned not to take the key out of the ignition while driving. Eh, it does have a number of good tidbits, if mostly about which buttons do what.

I did indeed read the manual - 6 years ago when I bought the car.

Senile dementia's a bitch! IIRC.
