Default Slow Leak from Transmission

A few weeks ago I flushed the fluid in the transmission; 84MY, now I have a slow leak. I need to get the car up on the lift bars to inspect further, but after looking at the PET I noticed that the drain plug is supposed to have a seal. I saw no seal when I removed the plug, and hence did not renew a seal.......so it is just plug to pan.

Based on the cardboard under the car, the drippings are right in that general area.

Could the seal have been original and just perished?
There is supposed to be a seal on the drain plug on the MY 84 right?

Any help and insight is appreciated!!

There's an aluminum washer seal on the pan plug and also on the torque converter plug on my 4-sp auto. If you missed either one of them, that could easily be the source of your leak. You can probably get one installed with a finger plugging the hole if the trans isn't hot when you do it. No Sealant!!

Got it, thanks!

Is that washer the same size for the TC and drain plug?

yes but the sealing ring on the TC is copper and the pan sealing ring is aluminum. That comes in the seals packet

There are other places that can leak from the auto trans.

Did you remove the pan to do the flush of did you just drain the box?

If you removed the pan you could have a leak from the pan gasket or from the "O" ring in the connection to the reservoir.

Once you get the car on hoist you should be able to determine where the leak is coming from.

You also have a vent on top of the box that will leak if the fluid froths.

Tails mentions other leak spots. Another common one is the filler cap seal. The overflow hose on the top of the reservoir too.

I used a mirror and looked on top of the res, all seems dry............I also remember the cap's seal being in place.

There is fluid at the drain plug, so I really need to get the proper washer in place to see if that stops the leak.

So, are you due for a fluid change or are you thinking of doing the finger in the dyke while you get a washer on that plug?

Haha.........the fluid change is what prompted the leak!!! I may just drain it again, but the finger in the dyke is a great idea!!

get your wife to fit the washer on the plug while you stick your finger in the hole

Right!!! Good call............although counting on the wife to assist in anything car related is a risky call at best
