Default window switch ghost?

Ok, I read all the threads I could find but this is still weird......

The other day my wife came home and said the driver's window went down by itself and then wouldn't go up. Tonight I tried the switch, you can hear the relay clicking...Ok, must be the motor.... or something is jammed in the gears.
Pull off the door panel and (old mechanic trick) smack the motor with the screwdriver head. Tap the switch a couple times and away it goes.

However, here's where it gets weird..... If I press the DW switch down so that the "auto all the way down" kicks in, it goes down and tries to keep going. I can tell this because you can hear the current drain on the air temperature sensor motor on the dash. Now it won't go up and the PW won't go up or down either.
But... If I tap the DW switch down again (even though it is already down), it something clicks and then both windows function mormally. Did this numerous times and tried to get the PW to lock out the DW but it won't. It only happens this way.

Anyone seen this? Is it the switch that is not "popping" up to release the window drive or is there a hidden stop-switch on the mechanism that is not telling the system to stop?

There can be other causes, but it is common for the edge of the switch to hang on the console.

You can HEAR the air temp sensor fan motor? Wow...it must be very sick...or your ears are sensitive.

There is no auto-down function unless you put one in - the switch is sticking.

took the switch apart, it looks perfect.
There is no "all the way down" feature? Even my 91 VW has that.

If that is so then it must be as Wally says and the switch is sticking. It has been that way since I got it.

I have the auto down function as well as the auto open sunroof. What year is your car as you may have the auto close with the key in the lock option. How is the battery/charging system as a low battery can make things act up?

Go Oilers!

No kidding?? My '89 doesn't have auto-up/down. In fact, that's the first I've heard of any 928 with auto-up/down switches (but I don't get out much).

@OP - What year is your car?

If it does not have auto-up/down, then I revert to my original diagnosis - the edge or corner of the switch tends to stick on the surrounding trim, so you won't find anything mechanically wrong with the switch.

Weird that your 89 doesn't have it. I have a 91 GT. I took the switch right out and tried it, it is not sticking against anything. It just seems to be waiting for something to tell it that the window is bottomed out. If I tap the down once more, it stops and everything is happy.

Also, not to sound too dumb, (I can change my ISV but I can't get any info to stay under my avatar, such as 1991 GT etc) How do you do this or is this at a paid membership level?

There is on '90 and up cars. but there is no special position on the switch for this - no extra click...

Alan, iIs the auto function all in the switch or is it in another component?

Or to put it another way - can I upgrade my '89 window switches to auto window switches?

The auto function is in a box under the seat - not too practical to retrofit...
