Replaced the old motor mounts and boy what difference! Started the car and it didn't even feel like the engine was running. Very impressed.
You can see in the attached photos that the old mounts were very compressed and you can see where the engine was resting on the side of each mount. I would say the new mounts raised the engine about 1"
Sweet!

Brian,
Your car has the solid rubber MM's supplied from the factory and they rarely fail.
Roger
Cars circa 83 and newer have the hydraulic MM's fitted

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

I went with the OEM mounts. Believe me I love to save a buck but there was too much uncertainty in my mind to use the Ford mounts. I had to go with what was comfortable with. I am happy with my choice!

Paul,
You should have posted a picture of the Porsche mounts as that is a rare and expensive animal.
Wise choice at the moment.

I was just thinking the 82 I'm working on was in need of mounts. I has a horrible vibration around 2-3k, I also noticed I can move the motor back and forth when I was prying on the steering pump to get a belt on. Didn't realize they were the solid ones, I guess maybe they could be failed anyways.

Roger, do I understand your post to say that collapsed mounts are a pre '83 problem? Or are you referring to the "competition package"? I have been assuming new mm's to be in my GT's future.

Yes, I wish I had taken side by side pics of the new and old mounts.
Mine didn't have a bad vibration at any range of RPM but more of a general harshness all the time. From the moment I started the engine at idle and revving through the gears. I really can notice the difference at idle now.

My old collapsed mounts looked just like Paul's, so at least the '83s and up have the newer type. I replaced them with the solid rubber mounts from Roger and also raised my engine nearly an inch. The passenger side intake tube is now much harder to install!

Check the mount condition. Look at the safety hooks. They are positioned on the mount facing behind the crossmember on the right side and in front on the left side. You should NOT be able to get a finger between the tips. Well, maybe a finger, but any more than that is bad. Then look at the oil pan to crossmember gap. You should be able to get a finger in there. Well, at least a pinky finger. Anyway, original 79, if true, should have this done together with a pan gasket.
