Intake install ~ Dwaynes epic
Installing the intake on the GT I came across the orientation question of the thrust washer sleeve.
I stopped knowing that the intake had been off before my hands and consulted Dwaynes epic intake R&R. Its would appear that he too was struggling with this question so I 'bench' tested the sleeve with new intake gskts, rubber thrust washer, umbrella washer and nut.
It was clear that the sleeve has to be oriented with the sleeve flange down to fit correctly in the intake gasket and form a proper seal. After placement of the intake gskts and sleeves the intake was slid into position followed by the rubber washers, umbrella washer and nut.
I'm not clear if there's a diff in S4+ MY intake gaskets that would suggest a change of what I've described but you never know.............YMMV

Malefico-
They're talking about grommeted metal sleeves that slip over studs in the cylinder heads to hold the S4 intake in place. There has been past discussion RE: the orientation of how they sit- the consensus is with the flared end DOWN.

The PET diagram is misleading, showing this apparent order from bottom to top:
rubber grommet, sleeve, washer
There are no pictures of this assembly anywhere in the WSM or any other 928 documents that I can find. I know my intake was not touched from the factory and I found the sleeve with the flared end down and I subsequently found them that way on other virgin cars. Dwayne thought he saw a bevel in the top of the new grommet that fit the flare, but I have never seen that. Anyway, I think we finally agreed that the flair should be at the bottom and it fit the hole in the gasket and better centered it than the straight end of the sleeve.

I am also convinced the metal sleeve is to be oriented down as Bill and Malcolm describe. On the last intake removal I performed, I tried it with the sleeve flange down and it actually helps center the intake gasket. I plan to update the procedure on the next revision. THANKS for the post, Malcolm.
