84 "Estate" automatic vs everything else!
Last Friday I signed up for a time trial with a local race club I like to run with...after discussing the cars abilities it was determined that I should run in GT3 class against many other street cars and race spec miatas.....in total 10 cars signed up!
So where doe the 1984 928 ex lemons racer with "only" 245/45-16 R comps sporting a brutal one legger automatic fair against all these "real" race-sports cars...
2nd place out of 10 GT3 cars & 6th overall out of 17 total cars in the time trial!!! Heres the days results..... I'm pretty happy to come within .2 second of my best given it was quite windy which hurt times

I gotta admit I really like the rogerbox on track..... its SUPER easy to drive and I can concentrate on braking-turn in points vs worrying about shifting.... Another aspect is reliablity...I have over 48 HOURS on track on this 150k+ automatic that I don't think has ever been rebuilt.....shifts firm and quick and runs super cool, never over 190F..... Just ask MK, Anderson or Sean...they all have HOURS of seat time in this car.....
Sure an LSD would be nice and lower ring-pinon that would give me another gear I can use....
But really for a $256 car with a $300 engine and lets say a grand total of maybe $5k invested (cage and seat are $3k) it gets around the track pretty well....
I remember when Jim Bailey was tracking his basically stock 81 and I couldn't understand why he didn't add all the whiz-bang go fast parts.....NOW I KNOW....I wrote the big checks for the widow...& have to show for it....... Now I have a reliable track car thats fun to drive and fairly cheap to run!!
As everyone knows...its far more fun DRIVING (in my case racing) 928's than wrenching on them!

That is sweet. Beating a Cayman S too.

I am hoping that The Iceman's plan of attack will work for me. I have acquired, I think, enough pieces to piece together a bare-bones race-track only car, and it will have probably an S4 motor attached to an early 4spd transmission, and not much else. I will have to find an LSD.

way to go Brian !!
Bet you had a blast pre-race watching everyone's reaction to the look of the lemons...then their reactions after the race when you placed 6th

ALL high level racing is now based upon the fact that less time spent manipulating transmission shifting is more time made up on the track. There is a distinct and clear reason that these race transmissions are reducing shift times to milliseconds. Yes, shifting with your hand and pushing in a clutch is "fun" and lets you feel your oats. BUT - it is NOT the fastest way around a racetrack if another, more efficient manner of accelerating are available. An automatic is not the best way to do this, but it may be better than a standard H pattern, when you are in a 928 which has such a pesky shifter process.

Brian,
Be sure to keep fresh tranny fluid in there... my '88 S4 tranny is shot because I put about 10k track miles on it and then thought, well it is probably about time to change the fluid...yea about 7k miles ago! DAMN IT! YMMV, but tranny fluid and filters are CHEAP compared to changing out a trans!

Understand ?
I do perfectly. These ultra cheap, clapped together cars bring serious concerns to those who have made real investments in the preparation of their race cars. Rules and driver accountability does not really cover such diverse value differences if a shunt were to occur.
Sorry if you think I am a "dick", but I think the gentlemen's understanding for standards surrounding race car prep is lost when an admitted ex-Lemons racer based on an antique 928 is racing with 911 GT3s. What's next ?
