Fiberglass dash and console: First group finished, come and get them !
Edit for quick reference... go to post 23 for pictures of the finished part. The price is 400 bucks for as long as they last. Please read the entire thread
for discussion on fitment etc.
]As part of my 928 boat project, I am making a lightweight fiberglass copy of the 928 dash and console. I filled in all of the openings and raised the console center out to nearly flush. I also filled in the windshield post cut-outs. My intention is to graft this into the boat and transfer the boat’s existing gauges and switch functions into a 928 dash pod (also molded in f-glass). An early 928 3-spoke wheel will complete the dash package.
As soon as I started roughing this out it occurred to me that this setup would be nice for my track car. I’m not thrilled with my current instrument and switch installation and this would give me a chance to integrate everything I have added piecemeal when I built the car.
The mold “plug” is going into the spray booth today and will get a few heavy coats of black epoxy to seal it. This will give me a stabile base on which to do the finish body work and then we will shoot a mold from this plug. I am only in this for the two dashes that I need. After that I am going to give the mold to my glass guy and I’ll pass along the names of anyone interested in having him make a dash for them. If this finished mold plug survives the mold creation process I would be happy to give it to someone who wants to experiment with ideas of their own.
Any interest in a one pc, lightweight dash?

Would be good to know what the weight differences are when you are finished. That is probably the most important part. Very cool idea though. Looking forward to the end result.

Absolutely. When the time comes, please let me know. Do you think it could also be covered and still fit into the dash space on, say, a non-track car?
Good luck with your project!

I'll start a separate thread so you can follow the boat project. Having fiberglass restoration thrown into a motor-toy project is a lot like meticulously rebuilding an engine.........in your 200 degree attic full of insulation.

I actually always thought it would be cool to make a smoother, more modern dash, also out of fiberglass. Using the stock mounting points, but with rounder lines, etc. At least having a fiberglass dash would be a better starting point to make those kind of modifications. And I am sure some people would like a lightweight replacement for the stock unit. It's a really good idea!

Stay tuned. I'm having mine done on a time and material basis so the cost will be known soon enough. I'm doing the mold plug for free so I'm guessing the price will be reasonable. You can all go direct....I'll pass along your contact info.

Please do, we are all gear heads here, does not really matter what it is, long as it is cool.
I am going to cover it with vinyl for the boat project.(actually I am going to beg Paul to cover it). For the track car, my plan is to spray it with wrinkle black paint.
Wally Black has offered to do the fiberglass work on the boat project. For my own use, I am only asking for a lightweight, chopper-gun sprayed part. I'm sure he could hand lay a part or make one up in carbon fiber if thats what you wanted.

awesome. i wonder what the weight savings would be over my ugly cover and gutted center console!Very cool. keep us posted. what I would do is make it a 2 piece deal, so you dont have to remove the pod to remove or install it. even if the driver side vent area with the under frame was a snap in piece, that would probably do it.
