Hi Hans,
after reading the whole thread again I think you are on the right path !
Thank you for the explanations of the limitations of the stock system .
Maybe a service partner for 928 can do the install .
One remark for the ac control unit. Can you add a Celsius symbol instead of F ?
Frohe Pfingsten !

if you look at the later examples I posted, you will notice that I replaced the "F" symbol with a pictograph that works with Celsius as well.

The same ***** and graphics will be used on both versions of the AC controller

To convert Fahrenheit temperatures into Celsius:
Begin by subtracting 32 from the Fahrenheit number.
Divide the answer by 9.
Then multiply that answer by 5

Glen,
very interesting !
Maybe the americans have men on mars and not on the moon if they put their funny measure system in the past in the trashcan. ;-)
Paul ,
the clean and simple new design is better. It follows the original design approach from Porsche .
nice

Well, this thread is due for an update.
A bunch of parts are on their way down for SITM. Paul has made several of the covers in a couple different styles, as well as the matching accouterments (shiftboot, *****... etc). Paul has accomplished a great feat, as he only had a short period of time to work with the most recent itteration of the frames. Pictures of these parts will be forthcoming, but because of the short time frame, they will likely be posted Thursday or Friday after I get them unpacked and assembled.
I will be leaving early Thursday morning, and taking a pair of host consoles to show some assemblies, as well as a working carputer for everyone to play with.
Unfortunately, it doesnt look like the climate control is going to make the show. I made a relatively last minute change to the system a couple weeks back to support more features and clean USB interconnectivity to pave the way for knobless climate, and advanced PC control. It is a change for the better, but required an almost complete redesign. After working on the previous versions, development is going very quickly, and would likely be ready at the end of the week if I could stay at it full time. It is possible that a prototype version could show up at SITM, but very unlikely. I will however be posting pictures and feature list on this shortly after coming back from the trip.
Also on the list of fun last minute changes, I will not be taking my car, which I had originally planned on doing. Amongs some other small issues, i recently developed a cooling system leak at the waterbridge which can sometimes result in system pressure loss, and high temps - its just too far to drive if it wants to run warm.
So, I will either be looking for a donor car to install the carputer system in at SITM on Friday afternoon, or will be displaying it table-top.
Now some good news. I have found some alternative 7" touchscreens that use capacitive instead of resistive technology. These are much more durable and sensitive. They also are made by 3M and have an optical grade anti-reflective coating, as used in eyeglasses and other lenses. These are also natively compatible with Windows7 touchscreen features like gestures. I am modifying the production version of the underlying frames to support these upgraded touch panels. The overlays remain the same, so it also allows for an upgrade path, or those who initially purchase resistive versions to swap out panels .
After working with the frames from a cosmetic standpoint, Paul has mad a couple small suggestions on ways to change them to improve durability and assembly. I will be implementing those, as well as the additional touchscreen mounting provisions, and then these will be ready to go. I anticipate that we can start fulfilling orders by the end of June or early in July depending on how long the PCB manufacturing process is on the climate control modules.
I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend, and will be available to answer any questions you may have, including the forthcoming climate module.
Thanks,
Hans

This deserves a bump. Saw it at SITM...UNREAL!!!
Pictures dont do it justice at all.
There have been many huge landmark advances in our cars by enthusiasts.
We have supesnions..power adders exterior cosmetics..etc etc...this is a WHOLE NEW category and level of work!
Nicely done Hans and Paul!

Had a good day at the shop today. Got 6 new inserts cut, still struggling desperately to have several finished models for SITM. These are the final skeletons for the 3-rotary version of the climate control. You can see we were able to retain the space for all 8 programmable function buttons (4 per side), and the dedicated volume **** between them. These buttons and volume **** will be an available as an option on the complete versions.
Moving down, you can see the cutouts for the rotary encoders, backlighting for the ****, and the radial arrays for the LED to show status.
I also got the a big batch of **** cores done today. Ran about 24 of the larger climate *****, and 18 of the smaller volume control **** (which will also be used for the stock-replacement version of the climate to fit in the original sized opening).
I didnt get the opportunity to make the molds to cast the rubber sleeves for the ***** on the "stock" version of the insert. I have the drawings ready, and will try and get them done soon. Until then, we are just going to have to make due with leather ***** from Paul.
I will post later in the week when I have some more news on the climate control. I made a very positive change with software/hardware, but it is still untested - waiting on parts. If it works, I will post all the details, if not, the version I designed in several weeks ago is still ready to go into production, and i have enough parts here to build something for SITM.
Thanks,
Hans

I echo Tony's comments! I found myself at SITM gravitating to Han's units many times. I'm so sold that I committed to Hans my purchase of two of the units....unbelievable Also, nice to know that 928 Specialists will be selling the units... I can't wait!!

Sorry I could not be there to help Hans with the presentation and explain my part of the project. But from what I hear, he did a great job and you guys kept him busy ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
We are fast approaching the last pre-production phase. Hans will post pictures for those who didn't see the samples at SITM.

Just so I can be clear on this. The ballpark we are talking about is for the carputer and climate control as well as the insert? So basically take out my center console, plug this in and I am good to go? That for sure I am willing to pay the high end double din price.

I think they are going to sell all of them they can make.
I am going to let them say what the pricing is when they get everything done, kind of hard to put a price on something when it is not ready for production and with such a huge difference in how you have it finished.

I don't want any rare hides, just your basic Australian Cane Toad hide.
