The dash is Miles over Kilometers like it is here in the U.S. I agree with Aryan, could be a U.S. model car that made it's way back across the pond, or it is one rare S3.

Sure is a US model, as it was imported from New York, dont have any pics of the motor as I am currently at work, will post this weekend.

Did find one small pic on the net of a motor exactly the same as mine:

My engine also has the unused connector (circled in the picture)

That's what the standard US 85/86 models look like.

Hi your Majesty: I think yours is what we refer to as an 86.5 928. It is in the time frame for S3 but the factory did not use that designation with those years--85 and 86. I think it was built later in the year so it has some of the changes that were going to go, and did go into, the S4 which started in 87. That includes the brakes and I am not sure what else. I think an 86.5 is a very desirable version of the 928. Yours looks really clean and well taken care of. I know there are many others on this forum who can tell you a lot more about your car , but I hope this gets you going in the right direction. I am not sure about lthe power difference, but I suspect it is based mostly on compression.

Does your car need a new Hatch Latch Receiver LIner?

Hi Jerry,

Rexpontius = latin translation of my family name "van Koningsbrugge" which translates into English as "Kingsbridge"
Thanks for your feedback about the car.

What do you mean with the Hatch Latch Receiver Liner?

The rear hatch is fastened by a male latch being inserted into a female receiver. The receiver is mounted at the back of the car and the male latch is mounted on the hatch. If you look into the center of the receiver you will see a rubbery plastic-like liner or insert in the hole which has a flange around most of the top, but with a gap in the front. Many 928's have lost this liner or insert and there may only be the recess where it was. Or, there may be only remanents of it there. Or it may have already been replaced with a new complete Receiver. That insert or liner is what I am talking about. I have developed a replacement for those that are missing or broken up.

US 86.5 has a serial number between 1001 - 3010.

That 'unused' connector is the pick up for a tester to get the top dead center from the sensor on the flywheel housing, and should not be connected.

US (or N. American) 86.5 also know as an S3 to our friends in GB and down under. We don't use that designation here in the states...we just call it an 86.5 to differentiate that it has the bigger S4 brakes.

OB would be 78-82 w/o spoilers
80-85 would be S w/ spoilers
87-91 S4
92-95 GTS

The S2 an S3 variants are the 16V '84 - '86 Euro engines that were rated at 310HP but said to make more like 330 and the S3 is the first of the 32V engines (most of them found here in the US) with what we call the "pipe organ" intake manifold...

Hope that helps.

Please do not pay any attention to the (imo hiddeous) chrome wheels. Repainting them silver will be one of the first cosmetic changes
Are they chrome or polished? My 87 had polished manholes and I loved them. to each his own!

Hmmm, isn't the zzz a ROW designated car? I don't think they delivered any zzz cars to the US in 1986, but I could be wrong. It looks to me like a plain ole 86.5, which is sometimes called the 'S3.5' version, just below the S4. A desirable model with 5 speed IIRC.

On the Dutch vehicle registration papers they imported it as S4, but I doubt this is correct.
You have the awesome version. Oh, wait... That's all of them...
