Default What exact version of 928 have I got???

Hi

I have another 928 newbie question

Looking on the wikipedia I read that the 1986 928 5.0 DOHC engine is sometimes referred to as S3, later followed by the S4. This S3 should have about 290 bhp, the S4 320 bhp.

My june-86 car has the 5.0 32v DOHC engine, but it looks different from some engines I have seen here on the forum, as my intake manifolds have hose-clamps and 'indiviual' tubes, whereas some other 32v engines I have seen here seem to have an intake body moulded from one piece.

What exactly is the difference between the s3 and s4 (where does the extra 30bph come from).

My vin number is wp0zzz92zgs861800

Can someone tell me what exact model i have got?

On the Dutch vehicle registration papers they imported it as S4, but I doubt this is correct.

I don't know exactly what the answer to your question is, but the engine may have been swapped at some point. I'm not saying it's likely, but it could have happened, so the engine alone is not a foolproof way to assign the model type of the car

Sure, that could be, but I highly doubt it.

I also have the newer 4-pot brake calipers and bigger discs, etc.
Is there any way of looking up the type via the vin number?

When I put the vin in PET7 it came back with WP0JB0924GS861800 as a corrected vin.

Kinda sounds like you have a 16v Euro S, often called an S2. Do you have a twin distributor for the spark plugs, one "thing" with two connected round sets of 4 all the spark plug wires are connected to?

Hi, it is definitively not a 16v engine. It has two distributors on each side of the engine, and the newer type of MAF sensor with hot-wire (not the flapper mechanism).

Furthermore it has the newer style brakes, etc.

Maybe its one of the Euro smog motors, 32v low compression, very similar otherwise to the US version.

WP0ZZZ92ZGS841800 is a swiss delivered manual S2, M28/21 with G28/10.

WP0JB092_GS861800 is USA (not California) delivered automatic 86.5, M28/44 with A28.07.

I guess this is the second one.
Equipment:
I158: Radio "Monterey"
M220: Locking differential
M418: Protective side mouldings
M490: Hi-Fi sound system
M494: Additional amplifier
M533: Alarm system
M650: Sunroof

Hmm, very strange, below are some pics

My cas is a 4 speed auto, not a manual.
Perhaps I made a typo with the vin number.

Please do not pay any attention to the (imo hiddeous) chrome wheels. Repainting them silver will be one of the first cosmetic changes

Since the discussion is about the motor, you might want to include a photo of it
