Default OB grill slat color

Looking at period photos of early cars they have there grill slats painted body color. I'm in the process of painting my 81 ob and wondering if the whole slat is body color or just the leading edge? Its hard to tell from photos but it looks like just the forward facing edge is painted body color.
I know it won't make a huge difference on a dark color car like mine (metallic black) but I like to try and get the details right.

Thanks,

Eddie

On mine the whole slat is the color of the car, not just the front, but the top and bottom too of all 3.

Thanks, linderpat It's hard to tell from photos how there painted. Mine have been painted with the crylon touch at some point so I wasn't sure. By the way I love bluemax

Is there any info on when the factory stopped doing body colored grills? a VIN break would be sweet but I know Im asking a lot there.

I have a very late-build '78 with painted slats. Appears to be later years too.

EDIT: There are so many of these nuances I keep in my head or in spreadsheets, hard to keep it all straight sometimes.

Both my '80 Euros came with body color slats. And replacements I've gotten are colored as well. THis whole discussion surprised me as I thought they always were. Was it an option, or an opt-out option, or some designers guideline of some colors/models match and some are black?

I wonder what the slat bin at 928I looks like.

I bought a replacement grill set from them, the slats were black. Not sure about used bits in general though.

My 78 & 79 cars have coloured slats but my 80 and on cars are black.
New is black from Porsche.

Well I stand corrected - just looked at my ROW 1980 S and they are body coloured.
