Default DEVORE CAR UPDATE

While in NorCal the other day, I went by to see the car.

"Barry" says he paid $8,000 for it quite a few years ago and wants $8,000 now. After seeing the car, I suggesed (very politely, I might add) that he should have taken the $5,400 high bid.

The car was a mess. He couldn't get the hood open, The fuel cell that was supposed to be in the car was under an enclosed metal barrier that was screwed in and there was no obvious fill location, inside or out. A major mystry. Suspect everything about the car needs replacing as it is either broken or out of date.

There was standing water in the rear footwell, which is great for mosquitos, bad for metal.

Barry said there was a bunch of papers, books, articles, etc in boxes under his house, which he has never gone through. Without an SCCA logbook, the cage wouldn't be grandfathered so it must conform to current standards. Potentially, a big problem.

The only value that I could determine was that it was Bob Devore's car. And, as someone else pointed out, it sure was ugly.

Just my take on what I heard and saw-someone else might have had a completely different opinion.

Larry,

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear someone went to look at it and that is a good assessment and about what I would have expected... The value of the car (as I always saw it) was that it was Bob's car! I figured just about everything would need complete going through and much of it to be replaced.

How sad.......

I hope it finds a good home, if anything for historic value. Us 928 owners only have a couple cars like this to hang onto.

Hopefully, someone else went by to see it and can offer a second opinion.

In the overall Porsche community, like you would find at typical events, what sort of place do former race cars hold? I assume a lot depends on the history, but do they draw attention or it is too messed with for the purists?

There were bits and pieces lying around, but I had completely lost interest. Didn't even take one picture, as I couldn't find anything I wanted to remember. Barry was into boats, as best I could tell. There were two small blocks and a big block boat motor sitting on stands, along with numerous parts.

Barry was not very mobile, nor was he anxious to show me anything other than the car. Seemed truly surprised that the hood wouldn't open and that there was no apparent filler to the "fuel cell."
