And the injector relay, you jumped 87 to 87a to 30, right?

Yep.
I changed the plugs out today also. I then messed with the timing by moving the distributor about a millimeter and the car started immediately. I then drove it about three miles and it died on me and I just got towed home.

I'm done!!!

Dude. You're gonna need a lot more patience than that if you wanna be driving a 28 year old sports car. A good mechanic will help, but this is still not gonna be a new Camry or even a new Volvo in terms of the time and effort its gonna take.

You stated that you got a weak spark from the coil wire, completely bypassing the distributor cap/rotor then I think you have a problem. It could be the ICU, a problem with a resistor, or a bad coil.

Bri,

You bought a car that was not running, you got it running (well Sean did), and then it died after to short a time. This is going to take some time and some money to sort out. We have GREAT mechanics here in Austin that are really good with 928's and more than a few of our *** members can take that car apart and put it back together too. Lets talk to Robinson and Ben G about it on Sat.

Remember, the car sat for about a year and it is nearly 30 years old man... Come on. I think I counseled you to buy something in the $4k to $7k range and that it would ultimately be cheaper. If I didn't then I will have one of the HOOTERS girls give me a good spanking on Saturday because RARELY (VERY RARELY) is a cheap Porsche really one...

You and the rest of the *** group will get this figured out and working right, it is just going to take some time. It is not your DD and so, just chill. I know you want to drive it like you stole it and that is was driving and running so strong when it was running, and it will be again.

Let me find my extra ignition switch and send it down to you, that could also be the problem.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble Brian. Hang in there, it'll get sorted out. See you all tomorrow, perhaps we can get a help/tech session organized.

I actually meant I was done messing with it for the night. I'll be back at it tonight, it's Friday. What else would I be doing?

Thanks guys.

I'll just replace one thing at a time.

Maybe you should try testing one thing at a time instead of replacing one thing at a time.

Just a thought.

Bri,

I thought I had lost you there for a minute! LOL! Glad I just misinterpreted your note!

Greg, what should he test. He had weak or no spark so did the cap and rotor thing, checked by locking and unlocking to be sure it was not a factory alarm issue. Where to now. Sean is gonna send an ignition switch (those things cause CRAZY stuff to go haywire)... Coil next you think? Ignition box that was mentioned by someone else?

Looking forward to getting this sorted out and running right.

Brian I am not familiar with this kind of problem but the moving of the distributor and the car starting seems like a good place to investigate further.
Maybe some of the experts here can figure out why you had results with that adjustment....Just a thought

You know, the green wire is at the base.
And the movement itself relates to timing.

Honestly at this point I think he needs to take it to Sean.
You can test almost any non electronic electrical part on that car.
I would start at the coil to make sure I had a good primary pulse, then work back from there.

Kind of a "choose your own adventure" story, start anywhere, or in multiple places, and test your way through it. To me, that's the essence of the hobby experience. To others (with more sense), its simple, sustained and blazing hell.

To those that have watched Fire-Sail Med rescue a shark, its more like Mel Gibson staring-down that Rottweiller. At least he's sensitive not to drive the non-runners away while the PO stands there in disbelief with a couple of coins clutched in the fist. (just had to get that in, too bad he doesn't live in TX to help you)

Sean is over 200 miles away and had the car (w/o any of the problems we are looking at now I might add) for 6 weeks or so...my guess is it won't be going to Sean because of the distance. It will have to stay here with some of the local folks (many are very good w/ 928's and one of the shops the guys that work there ALL own their own 928's...or a couple of them even)!
