Default 5-Speed Tranny Available

In my search for a back up tranny, I found one in a car that will be partially parted later. I contacted the seller and here's the response:

"It is from a 1986 928 with approx. 120,000 miles. I purchased it about 5,000 miles ago, and when the fluid was drained, it looked great (no shavings). I have since run Redline 75w-90NS fluid in it, and it shifts perfectly. It has a leak at the input shaft, but that will be repaired before sale. No limited slip.

I am currently in the process of moving my shop, and the transmission is still in the car. It will probably be the first week of May before I can remove it. I would like to get $1200 plus shipping for it--I can freight it for very reasonable rates."

It's at ebay #220565491684. Hope someone can use it and I'll bet you could get shipping included for the $1,200.

Hey, thanks Larry for posting the info! That is my transmission. If anyone is interested, feel free to shoot me a PM. If you are interested, I can probably work around the move to get it out for you sooner.

The catch with the vin is if the vin is from the first or just the last car it came out of.

Guys:

Not sure if you know it, or not, but complete cars are for sale for the price of your transmissions....

Yeah well lets hope not

The day all 928's are worth less than the transmissions is the day your going to be out of business.

Doubt that, some will always be willing to pay for quality work.
Seems to me that some shops have long wait times and charge what they need to charge, others, who offer cut rates seem to come and go.

There are a lot of different "grades" of these cars. I don't think I work on many cars that are worth $1200.00, but they are out there...everywhere, right now.

There are so many different people taking these things apart and trying to sell the parts, that it has gotten almost silly. And the market is really saturated.

Look at that list of stuff that the guy that bought Mason's stuff for has/wants for the pieces.

A ton of the stuff he has for sale is just worthless.

I'd be giddy if I could get $225.00 for a used crankshaft. I'd dance all night if I could get $125.00 for a used exhaust manifold. Intake manifolds? How many do you want?

There do seem to be a lot of people out there parting cars today. There may never have been more used parts available. However at the same time, the value of a 928 today that isn't in good running condition is almost certainly lower than the value of the parts that can be salvaged. This appears to be particularly true of the 32V cars. If someone wants to part a car for $2-3K+ rather than selling the car complete for $1-1.5K, and they consider their time free, then who can really blame them. For some the hard dollars are more important that the time required. Often this money will go into a subsequent project.

Who knows, someday we may all look back on these days and wish we'd held on to even the poorer examples; although, the consensus on this list appears to be that only the low mileage pristine examples will ever be worth anything.
