Default Steering Rack Bushing Removal

Just thought I’d share.

Here are the tools I used to remove the steering rack bushings.

I drilled through the rubber several times and used two sockets and a c-clamp to press out the “inners”.

I then used the chisel on the “lower flange” to collapse the “outer” into it self. Once the flange was “small” enough to fit through the rack ear, it was easily driven up and out with the chisel.

This all took less than 15 minutes with the rack still in the car.

Sorry, no pictures of the actual process. There is no way I can possibly compete with Dwayne.

And I forgot to take some of the replacements from Roger. Will post those later.

Great write-up Denny - thanks. Could be very useful for me in future. Simple tools used with ingenuity.

Less than 15 minutes but that was only for bushing removal, the car was already on stands with the cross member out and the rack just hanging.

I use a air gun and chisel. Less that 5 minutes to reomove all 4. No BS.

I use a framing hammer for all of my repairs. It is also handy for fighting off the wife unit.

Took me about 20-25 min . Once the car is up on my 4 post lift ,and the pans removed . I used a bolt extractor to twist out the inner piece , then colapsed the outer with a small chisel . Pushed it up and out, cleaned up the rack holes , and installed the new solid bushings . Very easy job .

I WISH it took me 15 minutes to change the old failed bushings to the solid aluminum ones...more like 2 hours..... Pushing out the rotted rubber part is easy...getting the metal sleeve out is NOT....

For anyone who finds this thread in the future... This job WILL NOT take you 15 minutes. If you do have an air chisel, you're lucky. If not, go buy a cold chisel and a 2.5lb sledge hammer to bend over the lips/chisel them off so you can punch them up through the rack.

Having kids nearby is a good idea. Be sure they are already familiar with the cuss words you'll be using

Good Luck!

I use a small propane torch and burn out the rubber then a hammer and chisel to get the steel shell out.
It's quick and painless.

I ground off the lip, then it was muchh easier to push the total bushing out, rubber and metal.
