Default Boge shocks

Was wondering if they are prone to leak any more than aftermarket shocks? Those who have bought them, how are they holding up?

I bought a new set of red Boges (as per option M474) for my '89 GT, and apparently they had been sitting on the shelf for a few years.

One of the front dampers was leaking, and was a bit slower to regain full extension after being fully compressed.

I got a new one. Luckily I discovered this before installation. I installed the set with the original springs in threar, and Club Sport springs

After installation I got an impression of lack of dampening in the front. As if the shockabsorber was not able to fully dampen the spring action. This was with original 16" Club Sport wheels (8" in the fornt and 9" in the rear).

I the installed another pair of 9" wheels in the front with 245/45 tyres and 42 psi. The car now is stable and firm, no floating and the absorbers seem fully able to dampen the spring action. So what may have seemed to be a set of sluggish or even leaky shocks, are just fine. I guess it was the tires the flexed and gave the floaty impression.

I have good experiences with red Boges; my car has option 474 and I replaced the original set with new ones two years ago. At that time, the original red Boges looked visually good (no leaks). I have Club Sport rims as Ragnar with Club Sport springs (front) and the car has a firm (not hard) yet very comfortable ride.

I've seen no issues with leaks on the ones I've installed. Been running new ones on the '88 and on the '90 (sold now) for 2+ years with no leaks. Have yet to see a new set leak.

Boge reds? Never heard of them, how do those compare to the regular ones? Mine is a stock early 86 if that matters. Why only the club springs in the front?

Boge reds (or Bilsteins depending on year) were the "sport" shock option (M474). They cost quite a bit more (maybe 2.5 times) than the standard Boge's and have more dempening, but the standard Boge's are good and many people are perfectly happy with them. These shocks rarely leak. A buddy replaced his original Boge Reds at around 100K miles and sold them on eBay for $100. The buyer installed them and remarked how good they performed.
