I got my copy of Excellence today.

Damn nice article - they really did a great job of getting in a lot of the technical details and getting it right! Im very pleased with it.

Only one mistakle that I saw, at the end of the article, they said we will be back this year (2010) to try again at Pikes Peak. Sorry, but we are not going back there this year.

That spot in our schedule has been replaced by a trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats instead.

I did and it was a great story, great read.
I ran across it at "Motorbooks-Aerobooks" in Burbank and bought it a few months back. If I had known it was available at Carl's site I would have gotten it there. Ienjoyed it a lot--a quick and enjoyable read! Some hair-raising adventures with the tow vehicle spice things up too!

Awesome! What's the target MPH and what will be changed on your car for that event?

The Bonneville build is exhaustive.

My whole car is set up for downforce, and that has to change.

We know the frontal area of my car, and the stock Cd (Coefficienty of Drag) is 0.34 for the 928.
With those two factors, plus the OD of the tire we will be running (28.4") and our FDR, we know we need to bring no less than 750 HP to match the current record in this class of 231 MPH.

Thats a tall order. We are working on both ends of the problem at the same time.

We will be trying to get the car down to 0.29 Cd, and I am trying to bring 850 HP to the event. I am building a special supercharged, stroked, sleeved, 32v motor for the effort. I have cams, ported heads, headers, sleeved block with squirters, pistons, and stroker crank all set to begin assembly of the motor now. We are still in the SolidWorks stages of the intake manifold design, although I have had 2 iterations printed in SLS and tested on the heads already.

In theory, if we do get the Cd down to 0.29 and if I do develop 850 HP, we should be able to acheive 250 MPH at 6850 RPM. In theory.

This is why, on my schedule for this year: http://www.928motorsports.com/2010track.php
we are only doing a few road races, then the car comes in and gets converted into a Land Speed Racer for the effort.

We'll see. It's quite possible that this will be our "learning year" and we will go back to Bonneville next year more knowledgable and better-equipped.

Here are a few photos and a drawing showing some of the intake manifold flange work we have been testing.

This intake manifold is designed specifically to port-match to our modified CNC ported high-flow heads. Read about these big-port high-flow heads here:

Solid Works drawings and design are by Ryan Sylva. Excellent work. I test his patience all the time. :-)
