Low revving? I can remember when a SBC 283 bored to 4" with a Crower cam would tach to 8K. Telling my age aren't I?

I'm just asking...Has anyone ever seen a 928 engine in something other than a 928?

maybe you can talk to the vet boys Ive been racing for the last 10 years. I lost track of how many spun bearings, head gaskets and other major issues they have had while mine (bone stock, 928 S4 engine with NO mods) had been running and racing ahead of them. Nothing wrong with the vet or vet power plants. they spend a BOAT load of money to get them where my stroker is today, with stock cams. pick you poison. I prefer the reliabilty and the power and economy of the 928 platform. But, surely there are other solutions out there. Heck, one of my top competitors in my last race was an AIX car with near 500 hp . I think it was an RV motor with a redline of 5000rpm. oh yeah, it was toast after the one season. His new one, also 500hp, might last a little longer. Go ask him what it cost to build.

Just remember, no substitute!

FWIW, my 87 S4 was taken care of before I bought it last year. The interior is in beautiful condition, and the exterior still shines up very nicely. The car is a blast to drive. It has some issues with the cruise control, and the sensor lights in the dash not working. I only paid $8000.00 for it. OTOH, my Pantera cost $10,000.00 new and I've spent over $ 100,000.00 on it in the last 35 years. The Dash II ZF, transaxel costs more than 15 grand, and thats almost double what my shark cost. When the Pantera is running you can't hear the radio. The Pantera is fun to drive, but it takes its toll on you, not a car for real long trips like the 928. If I were to sell the Pantera, I might be able to get 60 thousand for it, if I'am lucky. In the smiles per mile both cars are at the top.
Compairing Corvettes to 928's or any other car is apples to oranges. I don't think its valid.

Oh, I know the SBC can be done up. I'm a purest, however, part of the magic of why I want a particular car is the engine as well as the body. I'm a whole package kind of guy. But, I will admit, I do get disappointed when someone buys a Pcar or other car and decides rip its engine out for something more 'reliable' and 'less expensive to maintain.' That, to me, nullifies the charm of the car.

I've had a number of Corvettes from a 1960(awful but cute) to a 89(fast but ugly) and they are not the same as a 928 even though the air cooled crowd thinks they are. I had my 86 out for an 2 hour drive yesterday to show to a potential buyer(who did buy it) and I did not have a backache when I got home.
That is a major thing for me as I have some disc problems in the lower back. I can also climb out of the 928 a lot easier. No matter what year Vette I've had or driven including my friend's 1 day old convertible I always have a sore back or numb leg when I get out of them. That's the clincher for me.

I appreciate all the viewpoints . I agree with most of them - I learned a few things too. I hate to see a Chevy engine in a Porsche or Jaguar. It seems like the longevity of the 928 motor is quite remarkable..I posted that 928 pic because I was mad at that guy that posted the thing about mullets, Vettes and trailers. I've always known Corvette is not even in the same league as a 928.
Its time for me to come clean. I don't know why that one Guy thinks I have a 944 turbo My toy car is indeed a 1979 L-82 Corvette. I bought the car in 2005 and have been restoring it since then. It has been in paint the last 5 months and I am getting it back this weekend. I have gone through the car completely - and paint is the last thing. I have spent way much more money on it than it is worth and more than i will ever get back. I have only driven it 500 miles since I have owned it. I love the car but my heart is in the 928.
Whats a guy to do?

What's a guy to do? Enjoy the experience Rob! Whether a Corvette or 928...it's all about what spins your propeller.

Now, how 'bout some pics of that '79?

One Corvette guy to another, the biggest mechanical issues are going to be the rear trailing arms, (wheel bearings) leaky brake calipers, and if they were rebuilt when it went in for paint, they are going to be leaking now and the lack of power with the stock engine.

My biggest issue with them is the non opening rear glass.
