No 928 - Will keep my Vette
I know this is going to make some of you mad....I've always wanted a 928 - I got pretty close to buying one until I checked out all of the repair stories and high bills associated with keeping them running. I know what you are thinking - "these are elite GT supercars and warrant the extra maintenance so that you can have all of the performance perks that they offer. " - The fact is that you cannot drive a hundred miles in a 928 without having something fail. Boom - there goes another easy $1000 (if I do it myself) and I have to tear out half of the engine compartment. Does anyone ever drive their 928 over 10000 miles without getting taken to the cleaners?
If a 928 was half as reliable as a Corvette then I would buy one. Let me ask a burning question: Why do performance cars have to be un-reliable cars? Just because a car is fast and performs - why does it need constant attention?

Rob, nice drive by! Clearly you have not asked ANY QUESTIONS here and have no idea what you are talking about.
Can't even tell you how many people have packed up and driven their 928's across country w/o issues!
Keep you Vette though...you can't beat it for bang for the buck. Or rattles for the buck either! NICE...NOT! Can't even tell you how many people buy vettes new and then end up at the P-car dealer and trade them in a year later because they are rattle buckets...but to each his own.
Your not buying one just leaves another one for me to own!

I've spent a lot of money on upkeep and repairs since getting my 86.5 automatic in 1994. That said, I've also driven it up and down the east coast without having any problems during long trips. Most recently, a 1000 mile round trip from NJ to Maine.
I have a 95 Corvette with less than 15K miles. It's a great car. 6 speed. Real fast. Overall, I'd still rather drive my 928. The 928 has almost 100K more miles on it and still feels much more solid. At high speed it feels more stable. Nice luxurious full leather interior compared to the cheap feeling of the Corvette's interior.
They're both great cars and people car argue about which is better. It's all personal opinion. If I could only keep one of the cars, it would be my 928.

I sold my Hemi Dart in 1989 for a lot of money & decided to buy myself a real nice car. A 'vette or a 928. I always liked 928's. I drove a few new Corvettes. All that plastic in the interior was crap. Then I drove a used 2 year old 86.5 928. Leather interior, handled way better than the Corvette. The quality standard of the 928 was so much higher than the 'vette inside & out. Sold!
I still have the 928 & have never had a major problem in the car. I've never come close to regretting my choice.

Really my Vette I drove in college was the biggest POS I've ever driven and it was 6 years old. My 928 is 28 years old and one of the nicest I've ever driven, and I purchase a new DD every 3-5 years.

Until the last few years I don't think you could say anything positive about Corvette durability/reliability, and I'm not sure that is even justfied. I've passed several broken down Z06s during open road racing in Nevada.

Never been a fan of the 'Vette, but to each their own. I'll take my 928 or my XKR any day over the overpriced Camaro.
The new Car and Driver has a comparison of the new 997 vs the new ZR1...the ZR1 is close to the price of a 997, over $120,000, and I think you'd be few cards short if you would even consider paying that for any lackluster, low-quality GM product that's going to lose half of it's value the second you drive it off of the lot...however, there's no accounting for taste, obviously.

Don't know what to tell you about performance cars. Maybe try a Panoz.
And, be sure to circle back to post 8. Don't really care what you think about 928's.

You must be one of those people that don't "really" understand how cars work. There is no "magic" to different cars. The reason why high-performance elite cars break down often is because they are never DRIVEN ENOUGH. They sit in a posh garage day after day, week after week, year after year and are maybe driven 3k miles per year if that. This is not good and any car will develop problems because of it.
I've been daily driving two different 928's for over 10 years (first an '86 that I put 80k miles on and now the GT that I've already put 23k miles on) and I've really only done routine maintenance on them. Clutch, timing belt/water pump, ball joints (because the boots were ripped), brake pads/rotors, fluid flushes/changes, accessory belts, misc interior pieces such as inner door handle, door stays, plastic clips, bulbs, battery, some relays and fuses, A/C o-rings, flush and recharge with R134A, etc. There are some annoying design bits that I would rather the factory did differently, but they are by no means difficult or expensive to repair when broken.
The people who think 928's cost way more $$$ to maintain than other cars fall into one of the following categories:
1) They bought a car that had its maintenance neglected and now have to play catch-up. This also usually means replacing more expensive items because a $10 part was not replaced on time.
2) They never drive the car, maybe only on some weekends and then only a couple of miles. Cars do not work well when they are treated like this.
3) They are obsessive-compulsive nit-pickers that have the unrealistic vision that EVERY square millimeter of the car MUST be perfect and never stop until everything looks like the day it came from the factory.
