I've got two GMC 2500hd 4x4 trucks, tough, dependable, rugged,*** kicking. I have pulled every type of truck: Toyota,Dodge,Ford, Fuso, even a chevy out of the ****. I love them, I wouldn't consider driving a different brand. That said.... when I decided to buy a toy car, I won't say money was no object, I looked at a bunch of different cars up to $40,000.00( 1990 or older only). I gotta say, I think the most cliche thing in the world is a 40 something guy in a vette. I researched about 20 different cars, types before I came to own a 928, don't think reliability, cost of ownership wasn't high on the list either. Shut the door of a 928, then a vette... solid... crap.Drive 10 miles down the road quiet... crap. Vettes are fast, they appeal to a big part of my redneck youth (I'm still a redneck, not so young). Unless it's been built in the last five years they just don't stop or steer at speed. All of them feel like disposable plastic. All of them rattle after 5000 miles. They are not built to last. I am, and I want a toy that will last me til I'm much older. I do spend a **** load of $$$$$$, but the only thing in the past year to leave me stranded in my own drive was a $9.20 ground strap. I even call that my fault, I have read Rennlist and I know better! The money I mostly spend is on stuff "I" need, or stuff I think my pride and joy deserves. The 928 died too young, the Vette has lived too long.

Uh I spent more money on repairing a 944 than I have on my 928 in a 2 year time period for both cars. Finding a car with records is the key to a reliable one. Any car can go boom if it isn't taken care of.

The motor hasn't even hit redline at 120mph in 3rd. Allegedly.
Had no idear that 3rd would theoretically go over 120mph.
Guess I shoulda read the manual.

I know what you are thinking - "these are elite GT supercars and warrant the extra maintenance so that you can have all of the performance perks that they offer. " - The fact is that you cannot drive a hundred miles in a 928 without having something fail. Boom - there goes another easy $1000 (if I do it myself) and I have to tear out half of the engine compartment. Does anyone ever drive their 928 over 10000 miles without getting taken to the cleaners?
If a 928 was half as reliable as a Corvette then I would buy one. Let me ask a burning question: Why do performance cars have to be un-reliable cars? Just because a car is fast and performs - why does it need constant attention?
I bought my 1991 S-4 about six years ago. My neighbor has a 1991 Corvette ZR-1 which he purchased new. He has half the miles on his Vette that I have on my S-4, and his repair receipts are at least double the repair receipts for my 928. I've driven his car several times including once from Santa Barbara where he broke down at a music festival.

He is currently shopping for an early model 928 to use as a daily driver. Maybe a 4.5L, something small and dependable.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Vette and always have, but year for year the Porsche is a much better car. Quick story, a couple of months ago, I was driving in Beverly Hills, and some guy asked me if I had a corvette engine under the hood of my 928, and I asked him, why would I put a corvette engine in my Porsche, he looked at me rather dumbfounded and said, "yeah man, you're right"

I have a 01 z06 and a 86 928. Both are track cars. Both have their weaknesses as track cars. As street cars, both are more than reliable enough. The 928 suffers from age, which is same as the Vett will someday. As far as parts prices go, GM has more expensive parts than you'd think ($350 wheel hub, 928 are rebuildable).

As a side note, I put some Stoptech brakes on my Vett and now it can share brake pads with the 928!

I have a feeling that somebody somewhere is watching this thread and laughing his head off about how serious his post was taken...

Ok Ok - I get the picture...This was never about a Vette being a better car than a 928...I like them better than Corvettes! ..They are rare and distinctive..You have to admit that the frequency, price and labor of Porsche parts/service is higher than GM. I know - there is always the 928 owner that says "just oil changes here" - but I have read the repair threads in this forum and all I can say is Wow. The timing belt/water pump ordeal is just one of them. I know that I'll never convince you guys. You are very fortunate to own them

The 2 cars really are for different audiences. I thought about the 'vette and the 928 when I was looking. The technology in the 928 seemed to be a decade ahead of the 'vette, it had more finesse, and the ride comfort was hands down better. On top of that, I had a couple of young kids and new that I would be able to get the whole family into the 928 ... decision made.
I did worry about what I was getting myself into as far as maintenance, but I was soon amazed to discover the resources out there like this forum. If you hold out for a properly maintained sample, and continue on that path, the car is a joy. I have no reservations regarding the reliability of my 928 and will take it out of town for a trip without any worries.

It is OK to keep a vette.

My '86 928 has never needed a tow. Ever.

Let's chat about reliability.
