Pushing the transmission back when pulling the engine...Necessary?
The FWSM says that you must remove the two rear tranny bolts and slide the transmission back about 5 mm to be able to remove the engine. The first time I pulled my engine, I did this, and I remember that it was a real bear to move the tranny and then to push it back in place. Is this step strictly necessary? And if so, is there an "easy" way to move the tranny around without wanting to borrow an 800 pound gorilla from the zoo?
As in my sig, it's a 5 speed car, and I will be directly swapping out the engine for a different one, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

Not required in 5sp but is required in automatic IIRR. Unless subframe under the engine is lowered inch or two. Drive plate and flywheel cause the difference.

I could not get automatic GTS engine out without dropping subframe. I know its possible in manual car but automatic flywheel is larger and gets in the way. Maybe its possible but its simpler just to remove some extra stuff than try to manage with absolute minimum.

Done it twice on an auto without moving the tranny back. You just need to tilt the engine a bit so that it clears the pins on the bellhousing. Much easier to have a few friends around when attempting this.

Did not move my tranny, put engine back in alone, by myself that is. Had a little trouble getting last part of flywheel to clear then it just dropped in.

We didn't move the tranny back in George Suennen's 90 S4 when we pulled the motor. I don't remember a big problem. There was some jockeying of the motor and bellhousing to get the pins to line up, but we've had to do that with 5-speeds as well. It helps to support the TT with a 1" piece of wood between it and the front bracket under it as this sets the TT at its proper height.
