Help Me Choose a Lift
I was hoping that MTF Equipment would find me a used lift, but I'm starting to despair. I think I'm going to have to buy new.
Here are my criteria:
2-post clear-floor lift, must fit under a 12' ceiling.
The $6,000 Mohawks are beyond my budget. The Bend-Paks are all a smidge too tall.
Here are the options I've found so far:
I welcome suggestions, comments, anecdotes, and criticisms.

I would also consider a MaxJax, if you don't need to be standing upright under your car. They look like a great solution, though I'm still hosed 'cause I have a post-tension slab.

Call JAM Equipment in Houston. I'm just about positive they'll have several used lifts in the next couple of weeks. Might even have a 9k Mohawk. I'll PM you the number next week.

Now that's interesting. What do those cost?

Look at the WheelTronics, they make the Snap-On lifts, they were bought out by Snap-On, damn good lifts, the last one I bought was a 9,000 LB unit.
IIRC it was about $2,500.
My oldest one is going on ten years and I have only had to replace the guides in it, and that was because of misuse.
What ever you end up with, make sure it is ALI certified.
I had a BendPak for three weeks, and I will not make that mistake again.

Of the four I listed, only the Rotary was ALI certified.
Other ALI certified 2-post clear-floor <12-foot lifts:
Quality Q10000 ~$2700
Challenger VS10 ~$2750

Burning Brakes
I purchased a model PV-10 from Greg Smith sales (http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/) and have been very happy with it. It is right at your 12' ceiling hieght.

Mark, keep me in the loop on what you find locally, I'm also kicking around this idea.
I just wish I could find a 2 poster with a longer base. Seems like a no brainer to put a 3-4' base so that the bolts into the concrete don't have as much stress on them (I don't have a lot of confidence in my garage slab). Might not even need the bolts if the base was long enough. They have a lift like I want on that British show Wheeler Dealers, but it may have been customized since I haven't seen any like it on the web.

Well I ended up with a bunch of holes in the floor really close to where the even newer holes needed to go for the even newer WheelTronic lift.
I had a company that did concrete work come in and cut about 5'X5' section out, drill into the old pad for rebar, go down deep for a footing and re-pour a deeper pad for the lift, at the time it was only about $500 bucks.
Also, the Wheeltronics has low clearance lifts, that is what I have and I can stand underneath a 928.
Again, get a lift that is ALI certified, a lift that fails can ruin your day and it is very easy to get a car off center with a two post asymmetrical lift.

Greg--
What turned you away from Bend-Pak? They are right up the road here and were near the top of my selection list.
Of course the MaxJax piece solves a nagging problem of having the columns in the way when not lifting. Decisions decisions...

Speaking of the safety catches had to be released on each side, which means most mechanics are going to be walking under a car with at least one catch unlatched every time they lower a car.
Maybe the biggest thing was I was so impressed with the first Wheeltronic that I let the lure of a low price convince me to to buy one.
