The alignment was needed because the entire steering rack was replaced. I would think that he would have noticed during the rack replacement rather than during the alignment. He does watch for other known issues with 928s.

Still a very easy self-check to verify.

Does this technical bulletin apply? Might help the shop guys if they don't have it.
Thanks landseer that technical bulletin scan really shows the difference and has the part #'s -that's really helpful

re: chrly924
Thats the upper ball joint epoxy repair kit procedure, right?
Thats on the list too --

As dr bob and James Bailey pointed out - the steering rack, boots, motor mounts, motor shocks, -of course that leaky oil pan gasket (gee all the bolts were loose wonder why -lol) the list is really long -

How long have you owned your 928?
The car was towed up from CT mid Sept 2009 -it had sat for 1 year; I did some silly brake light hacks, a new gas line banjo, check valve, coil, plugs, oil and antifreeze -passed inspection 10/5/09

Drove it everyday , earned the title of the "*****" from the wife with all the time and money I spent and now I'm suffering withdrawls--puttering around in the heated garage wondering why I let the towing company talk me into leaving my car in their outside lot- I hope I see those parts Tuesday ....

I'm the idiot that didn't change the aluminum ball joints to steel ones - Look kids don't let this happen to you

I've ordered the gas lines as well-thanks Roger

No problem.

If you don't have yet, consider getting the Morehouse CD from Roger, it has an incredible amount of documentation such as this, in addition to the WSM/wiring diags.

The supplemental stuff is well organized and a pleasure to read.

Ouch... looks like it buggered up the paint on the fender too... good sized wrinkle over the arch. Charly brings up a good point -- check the upper balljoint carefully.

So the Prius is subject to a worldwide recall because the ABS gets momentarily confused on bumpy roads, but there was no recall for this issue? Is this because we're 27 years on?

Exclamation

The best fix is S4 front suspension , the early suspension is a poor design with the weight of the car is trying to pull the ball joint apart . Steel or alum , its poorly done .

Just replaced both the AL balljoints on the Jalapeno last weekend. Hadn't had any problems yet but I like to circumvent problems if I can.

Drift King,

Are you going to get the Jalapeno painted? Have you decided yet?

James,
Yes, I probably will end up painting the Jalapeno before it's all over with.

Yup, this is why part of a proper alignment is getting the wheels off the ground to check everything.

If your shop knows what they are doing, lifting the car prior to the alignment shouldn't be an issue.

And now I'm ordering the gas lines
Oh nooo.
that is how my current 928 project started. then I developed a full blown case of WYAAIT'itis. when the top end done, still have the MM, oil pan gasket and shocks.

several years ago my left rear tosion bar broke on my 911. had been on the track that day. the car was not handling normally, suspecting it needed an alignment, it appears the Tbar cracked before breaking totally. fortunately it waited until I was exiting a parking lot that night at walking speed to break. unfortunately this kind of incident is not predictable on a 911.

Quick fix -thanks Roger

Well it ain't really fixed but the new ball joints are in -cheep cheep too 215 for the tow and the labor to replace both balljoints

Tire is shot

Wheel inner is scraped up

Both uppers shot!

Pretty sure they were already gone

Now the steering wheel is cocked 11 and 4
and I have a metal sounding click/clunk when going over bumps

Steers straight though and feels fine (tire not withstanding) going straight

Guess I've got do the tie rods, ends, epoxy the upper ball joints before I try and get it aligned

I see the writing on the wall
