I thought I read a post some time ago regarding cleaning and perhaps "rebuilding" or at least refurbishing the fuel tank sending unit, but I can't find it anywhere using search.
Anyone know this writeup?
Thanks

Thanks Malcolm, but this doesn't seem to have the teardown info on the sending unit itself. I'm sure I saw this somewhere on Rennlist, but I can't find it.. I've found references on the cleaning solution, and I'll try that, but it seems to have some loose particles in it and I thought if I could, I would take it apart and make sure everything works well on the inside.

I seem to remember it's all held together by one nut at base but that's an odd size - 5mm?
With nut off the unit slides out of casing with complete access to float and the fine wires.

I just did this on my '84. I think it was 5.5 mm, but you can find a close standard size.
I believe Dwayne had a writeup.
For me, the key was using a plier-type oil filter wrench to carefully loosen the plastic ring that holds the assembly in the tank. The other hard part was removing the connector and hose at the top. I just had to keep twisting/working the hose until I could get it off.
I used acetone to clean the assembly. Worked wonders, and the plastic base of the sending unit was not affected.
