Funny noise, smoke related?
My 928 has eaten 2 alt belts in a few months. Last night I started the car, the belt started making a LOUD noise and started smoking real bad. I shut her down, check under the hood to make sure it wasn't motor related as in smoke, oil, something real bad. Started her up again and the belt was fine and no smoke.
I also have a noise, had it since I bought the car. Sounds like marbles rattling. The noise is mostly heard at low rpms in first, probably due to engine, exhaust and road noise. If I push the clutch in and coast at say 10 or 15 mph you can hear it. Clutch in clutch out makes no difference.
Any common problems with OB"s Could it be my balancer?

Bet your alternator is full of rocks or bearing bits and is inermittatly locking up. I had one lock up on me once in another car and it made a lot of smoke and noise!
I'd get one on order. Once is smokes it burns up a good bit of belt and may seem ok but you're on borrowed time.

make sure that the air duct hose is also installed and is in good condition otherwise the new alt will also be sucking up road debris

No air duct hose makes the alternator turn into a hoover. Rocks, dirt, squirrels, small children. All can cause issues as well as overheating.

I had the same thing with the ac compressor with a singing then rattling noise then 2000 miles later the belt blew and it was obvious what the cause was. At least you have the warning sound and can replace at your convenience.

Is your power steering reservoir leaking? Making the belts slip?

Drove the car yesterday for about an hour. All SEEMED ok. It has been raining so I haven't had a chance to check. I will get back when I get a chance to look.

Some info on what the original alt setup looks like here. Definitely check for debris as has been mentioned. Another possible source for the "marble" noise is the catalytic converter, if the core is beginning to come apart. If the noise persists after taking all of the accessory belts off one by one, check there next.
