Center Console Removal on Airbag Car
#16
I think I had to make a bit hole in the heater box to reattach the comb flap actuator arm, and used instruction from another member to do so - I think it was Ed Scherer who had done this particular write-up.
You may want to look for these two threads, if you are doing the comb flap actuator.

See the thread "Need help replacing vacuum actuator"; post #4 has some photos.
Regarding the "@#$%ing screw" issue, post #18 in the thread "Need help with center console removal on '90 S4" describes how I got mine out in November, 2003, and post #5 in the thread "Center Console Screw" has some comments about putting it back. IMHO, it is worth putting back.
For the most part, it's all about having the right 8 mm GearWrench, a long thin tool you can place along side it to apply lateral pressure, and some persistence.

Still wondering why the factory didn't install the bolt from the Console side instead of the dash side???
Wouldn't it have been easier if it was installed just like the 2 that bolt the top of the console to the dash?
These are accessed after you pull the center vent and it seems to me that this friggin bolt could have been designed to fasten the same way??!!!
WTF???

Why indeed? This thread makes me wonder ... have we ever done a PITA scale to rank these kind of ridiculously difficult things to work on?
We could pick a common task and set it at 100 to create a baseline and then let people post ratings for other absurd things they've struggled with ... extra points for those that are utterly unnecessary and/or could have easily been done in a different way ... like putting the flippin screw through from the console side ...

I must be a *****, I didn't think it was that bad... First, get warmed up with a brake MC r&r and blue-hose replacement...
I used a couple of long (8" + 12" IIRC) socket extensions and a 10mm u-joint socket (not a u-joint attached to socket, but a socket with an integral u-joint). All taped together with some electrical tape to make sure nothing came detached.
To get it back in (yes, I think it is necessary) I stuck a small piece of electrical tape over the socket (sticky side towards the socket) and nested the bolt-head into the tape so that it was held into the socket tightly, got the u-joint oriented appropriately and just stuck it back in. If the u-joint flops around, a wrap of tape will make it behave.
The glovebox was out, and the console side panels, but I think that was all I had to do.
We just acquired a 2004 Audi A6 allroad with a 4.2L for ski trips, the 928 is a piece of cake to work on.

Chuck, why not patch the holes from the phone? There are guys out there that can fill those holes and put the grain to match the existing console and then color match the classic gray..... I did it on the black 95 GTS that I had and you'd never know there were holes there...... Just a thought?

Chuck,
I may look into it, my concern is that the classic gray is hard to match. The console I've got is dead on match for the interior of my car, I just need to get the fix for the one broken pience on it.
I may try the fix with a color match as I've got nothing to loose.

CENTER CONSOLE..
OK members how long does this console for the airbag takes to removed? 3-4hours......I am thinking to remove it to have PAUL leatherize the thing-Does anyone have a good core??? I have 1990 pod extra for core if any members have a 90s console for exchanged. I need one to send to Paul for recover and i will give you mine after installing Pauls. So you will get a 90s pod and console in exchange.

Ok,
Finally got the new console semi-installed after doing
the Comb Flap and Footwell flap actuator diaphrams.
Upgraded all center console bulbs to LEDs.
Repaired the new center console (broken/piece missing in front of shifter)
Did a bunch of sound deadening on Pass side while everything was apart.
For "perfect" alignment I'm going to need to put in the infamous center console screw as that side of the console sticks out a little bit from the dash.
Should be fun!
