Default Center Console Removal on Airbag Car

I need to remove the center console on the GTS coming up pretty soon.
I've seen Pirtle's writeup and Dwayne's as well. Great job to both for the write up, this will help big time!!

This part I know: To access the bolt just to the right of the interior temp sensor on the non airbag cars, you remove the plug inside the glove box.

Question I've got. How do you access the same bolt on the airbag cars?
I'm guessing you've got to remove the glovebox liner itself and reach up into the dash to access it??

Any help appreciated!

And an even bigger PITA to put back in. At least coming out I could use a long straight screw driver to hold the gear wrench on the head of the screw. No way to do that on the way back in. It took me more time to put that screw back in than all the other work to replace the HVAC diaphrams for Def/Floor/Center and button everything back up.

Chuck,
Don't forget to disconnect the battery and flux capacitor for at least 45 days prior to attempting to approach the car while thinking about the airbag system.
Good luck!

I don't think there is a significant number of people who put that screw back-in.

Sooner or later you'll have to get in there again, but you sure don't want to have screwed yourself the first time you did it.

I think I had to make a bit hole in the heater box to reattach the comb flap actuator arm, and used instruction from another member to do so - I think it was Ed Scherer who had done this particular write-up.

You may want to look for these two threads, if you are doing the comb flap actuator.

Rob,
Thanks for the link!
The links off the link gave me good insite to this as well!

I'm going to replace the center console (classic gray) that's got 8 sheet metal holes in it from the dealer installed phone. Got a pristine (classic gray) console from Roger and will replace with it. Color matches right on with current interior. The only thing that needs to be repaired on the "new" console is the piece in front of the shifter plate. Sterling has some ideas for a fix on that so bringing it to him in the next week or so.

I'll also do the vac pods, LED lighting for the HVAC unit and the clock while I'm in there. If I get a wild hair, I'll install the Lizard shifter as I'll have the drill points sitting in front of me with this out and I DON"T want to have to take the thing back out again.

So many projects, too little time!!! Thanks again!

BTW, Nicole thanks for the info on drilling the hole for access, saw that on Dwayne's site as well. Several WYITs!!

Yeah, I did this last summer. Getting the bolt back in is a big PITA. In the end I gave up--I needed to get my wife with smaller hands to get the bolt started for me. I took out the entire glove box then you get on your back with you head down in the footwell to do the work (feet over the passenger seat). When the bolt goes back in it helps to have someone on the outside (i.e. not down in the footwell) looking at the bolt and lining it up appropriately (you'll be able to see it cross btw the passenger side dash and the center console through the seam)--then you can let the person who's turning the bolt know that they have it oriented correctly so start pushing and turning to get the threads started.
