928 Stories.. Are we all Possessed?
Everytime I come home from work and open up the garage and see my 928 under the car cover I smile. Everytime I pull up at a gas station and have people say "Awesome" or "Nice Car" I smile.
Although I only drive it every other weekend (my Prius is my daily driver). I just love this car so much.
The Reality is that this is a very expensive car to service, tires are a nightmare to find, Technicians are scarce, No one wants to work on them and Dealers act like they never even saw one. BUT.....I still love this car.
The sickness began when I saw my first 928 when I was 8 years old, in 1978. That's when my my sickness began and I wanted one. But they were always so expensive. My mother in law bought one in 88. I was 17. I finally got to drive it and drool on it. Sadly it was soon stolen and crashed/totalled. Since it depreciated so bad she had to replaced it with a Corvette because she felt it would hold its value better. Crazy!
When I finally had the extra money 5 years ago to buy one I took my time. It took me 4 months to find the exact one. I knew I wanted Black or Red and an Automatic because of Traffic in So Cal. Plus I wanted to find one with all the paperwork. All reciepts since it was driven off the lot. I finally found it and it was only $13,500. (WOW! That was less than I paid for my 1st new car in 89, a Pontiac Lemans. P.O.S!) The Seller was the 2nd owner in Mission Viejo California. He was selling it because he bought a new v8 Cadillac. I bet he misses the 928 today.
The first time I drove it, it was scary because it was really tight and heavy in the steering This was compared to other cars I've owned. I didn't remember how my mother in laws car felt back in 88. But I quickly realized that the car becomes and extention of you really fast. I also noticed that off the line it seemed like I had to put the heavy pedal to the floor for it to move. Soon you get used to it and other cars seem wierd.
Since I have owned this car, I have bought and sold 2 Mercedes, 3 Bmws, I actually had a Corvette for a short while, sold it in 3 months. I could not stand the creeks and raddles when I drove the Corvette. I noticed myself always picking the 928 and always giving the 928 the spot in my garage. So I sold the Vette.
Lately I have been thinking about getting a Boxter just to mess around with. But then again, I worry that I would not have enough time to drive it and I do not want to take drive time away from or neglect the 928 in anyway. Is this really the way I am thinking or is the 928 making me think these thoughts?
I am beginning to think this ownership is kind of a sickness or some sort of possession! Maybe the car is controling me and my thoughts.
What do you other owners think? Are you as nuts as I am about your 928?

If you are having problems finding tires, then you are not looking in the right places... While 16" HIGH PERFORMANCE rubber is not EASY to find, there is still plenty out there. The nice thing is that there are DECENT 16" tires that will last 15k miles give good wet traction, decent dry traction and cost less than $90 each!
As for service...you don't need a bunch of different people to service the car...just ONE GOOD ONE is all it takes and there are actually quite a few out there, but maybe not where you live. The dealership likely have NOT seen a 928 in a long time and it would be VERY unlikely that ANY of the service techs were ever trained on a 928. STAY AWAY FROM DEALERSHIPS, they don't see enough of these cars.
If you get a Boxster you will burst in to tears every time you hit the gas and nothing happens!
I have an EXTREME 928 illness...just look at my Sig line! I kiss each of them goodnight before I go to bed...REALLY!

Yea, pathetic really!! I can't even help myself! If I ever sell a car, anyone looking for a 928 would be wise to BUY IT! They are usually better after I have owned them than when I got them! Even BLUE82 is CLEANER than when I got it!

To the OP:
You really need to rent John Carpenter's movie "Christine." It sums what you're describing quite well.
I think there's a little bit of most of us here in that movie.

You know I have considered that...then I thought...would I rather have 2 or 3 928's and one 911 Turbo (996) or 6, 7, 8 928's... my choice was/is obvious! That said, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have a 2nd Gen 997 PDK TURBO!!! SOMEDAY...SOMEDAY!!! Along with a Ferrari 360 Spider and a Boxster!

Tires are easy to find, so are mechanics. The car is old and is pretty dated and simple to work on compared to some of the other out there. Just be careful you dont get an idiot that likes to charge to much for the name.

Sick ? Addicted ? Consumed ? In love ?
What are you talking about ? No one here is like that.
Great car and let us know when you get your divorce papers. Of course not from the car.

+1 hahaha.... mostly addicted I would say. 10 years now and still in love.
There must be something you have with this car, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this

It was all going so well.. until...
Sorry, good story though.
Yes this is a car that really gets under your skin. I find myself going out to the garage sometimes (where the beast sleeps), maybe just to get a screwdriver or something, but I'll catch myself taking a second glance, or just standing there admiring the view..
But the real problem I have with my 928 is.. if I have to start it, once I hear that V8 music, I'll just have to take it out for a drive.. (which, on reflection, is probably for the best as it doesn't do it much good just to start it and move it a few yards - or that's how I justify it to myself).
And I've lost count of the number of times a short direct route becomes the "scenic" route..
It's a sickness alright, but with access to the correct medicine (my doctor recommends a good driving road with at least one quiet 2nd gear tunnel along it) it can be manageable

I find myself just going out to the garage and staring.
I find myself trying to make the fact that it didn't snow TODAY a reason to take the car out. The thought of salt destruction has finally sunk in and I am driving my Explorer, which I bought just for the winter, in the winter.
I find myself laying on the service cover on my fender and poking around the engine bay for no reason at all.
I have lots of obsessions, 928 to be exact

Do you know what I repeated, over and over again, yesterday and Monday, when I brought my car home?
"I can't believe I own a 928."
"I can't believe I own a 928."
"I can't believe I own a 928."
"I can't believe I own a 928."
"I can't believe I own a 928."
"I can't believe I own a 928."
Oh yeah, and
I CAN'T BELIEVE I OWN A 928!!!!
