Default Lifting a 928 ENGINE

Here’s a simple question.

Where does everyone put the floor jack to keep the pads clear for jack stands?
Here is another simple question:

I am preparing to replace motor mounts. I realize that I can lift the engine from the bottom, but, I am going to replace the pan gasket as well. Where is the best place to “grab” the engine from the top?

I can not find any lifting points on the front of the engine. This is on the 86.5.

I lift the front first, using the lowr control arm mount bits.

Once the front is high enough, I put the jackstands in. Then go to the back and lift!

Front of the engine can be lifted from a lift point attached to one of the heads.

I think there is a lifting point bolted to the front of the water pump. There is also an extensive thread about how to do this recently on this forum, I think. It shows how to lift the engine from below then use a harbor freight engine lift bar across above the engine to hold it up where you need it.

The 85/86 cars dont have the lifting lug at the front of the engine.

Use a strap and wrap it around the fan housing at the base where it bolts to the WP. Lift it there.

I don't know it would work on 85/86 but you can use this thread to build you something to ''hold'' the engine from above.

Thanks to Andrew Olson for this.
It did work very well for me.

Good luck.

The Harbor Freight ENGINE SUPPORT BAR shown in one of the other very recent threads will work very well however you hook it to the front of the engine. I bought one for 49.99 when it was on sale from about 59.99. I suppose two of them could take the place of the double 4 by 4 method of you are interested in twice the money, but fewer trips to the lumber yard and less carpentry.

The front engine lift point on 85/86 is on the passenger side of the engine near the front, but not on the front of the engine. It's a rather thin looking peice of metal with a hole in it. Took me a few RL searches to find it too.

Look at Dwayne's write up on motor mount replacement. He has details on building the 4x4 hoist.

Don't you have to disconnect the front driveshaft coupler before you try lifting the engine for such a job? Or do you have to drop the whole clutch pack?

EDIT: Nevermind, the whole engine/torque tube/transmission unit should tilt up during engine lifting.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

But my point is: there are no lifting points on my engine!

Where should I attach a lift cable?

Can I use a strap around the crank shaft?

Someone mentioned using a strap around the fan clutch support in another thread.

I considered that but it bothers me. Looking at that part and the way it is bolted on; I don't think the geometry indicaates a good lifting point.

I just loop around the fan housing also on the 85 and 86. I stay very close to the block. It works.

You could pull it off completely and bolt a bracket at the same location instead, like the 87 cars have tucked under there.
