Early 5 Speed Transmission Options/Opinions
I am starting to have some of the usual synchro issues with my early 78 5 speed. Considering that I intend to keep this car for a very long time and am not a purist or concourse competitor I have been reviewing options. The car is not my daily driver, more a weekend cruiser and will not be used for track events.
I have searched previous threads on the issue and am using this info as the basis for my decision. Knowing this forum represents an enormous amount of 928 experience I would appreciate any opinions or suggestions.
My options seem to be one of the following:
Replace the synchros in my current transmission (best quote $1200+)
Find another early 5 speed (likely to have the same issues)
Find an 80 to 85 transmission (requires fabricating battery box hanger)
Upgrade to an S4 5 Speed (requires torque tube replacement as well)
If I have missed any major points or other options please let me know.

The transmission is still driveable. The main issue is slight gear grinding on downshifts, primarily second to first gears. The clutch is new and working well. The car only has 98000 miles but spent a little over 12 years sitting in a pine grove in NC.

My 79 used to get a lot better after it got really warmed up. I can tell you also Royal Purple gear oil made a huge improvment.

IIRC you also have to swap out the rear cross member with this trans change .
I think they have different part numbers

First double-check the clutch. At idle in neutral, push in the clutch and wait two seconds, then try reverse. If it grinds, the clutch is dragging. If it's really working well, you can shift in as little as one second without grinding.
