Default Installing longer rear wheel studs

Anyone installed longer rear wheel studs? I know I'll need to pull the axls so that's the part I'm most curious about.

I have the 928 shop manuals that should help.

You'll want to pull the hubs out of the bearings so you can press the studs out and in. That's the same project as replacing the rear wheel bearings, since pulling the hub takes the old bearing apart on its way out. There are a couple ways to do that project.

Please add your location and the year of your car to your posts so we know what you are working on, and maybe somebody nearby can share some hands-on experiences and maybe the tools with you.

Pulling the hubs pulls the rear wheel bearings apart. That pretty much means yer replacing them.

MK if your going to remove the rear hubs for different studs and your racing this car.
Putting in new rear wheel bearings is mandatory as these parts will be getting used at there maximum load factor, at racing loads/speeds damage will occur much quicker and usually cause more damage than a grinding noise,
possibly causing damage to the wheel hub and or the brakes

If this is something that's a regular task among 928 ownrs, it may well be worthwhile building a pair of fixtures that use a small porta-power ram to remove and install the studs with the hub still in place. Looking at the studs, it does not appear that the seats are swaged or peened at all, so it's just a matter of press in and press out. You'd need to remove the parking brake shoes for room behind, but otherwise this isn't rocket science. Rob, f you still have the rotors off your GTS, can you give me the distance, rear face of the flange to the backing plate? I can sketch a couple pieces that would take a little steel fab time if someone wants to make them. Budget can be up to the cost of a couple wheel bearings, right?

DrBob we tried this in the shop and you can push the old studs out of the flange but there isnt any room short of drilling a hole in the hub carrier for the stud to pass into to be free of the flange

Gotcha.

Mark, my B-90 wheel bearing press tool is or will soon be in BB's hands again close to you. If yo don't have the longer wheel studs installed now, it makes the bearing R&R a lot easier.
