I hope I can get my shark finished before SITM - speaking of which, if someone can recommend a good paint guy in the Charlotte area who doesn't charge outrageous prices, please feel free to shoot me his name...

Mark,

The shop that did my custom paint & body work fell victim to the economy and the main painter that worked there moved out west. The shop owner is now a PPG paint rep and owns an '86 928S. I can inquire with him on who he would trust with his own car...

You have already been corresponding with Sanjay... he is a proud new owner of a Guards Red S4, is a new PCA member and resides in the Ballantyne area to boot! He informs me that there are some other P-cars on his street of the "pancake-6" variety... a couple of rumbling V8's would certainly garner some attention... and dare I say, envy?

That would be outstanding, Barry; many thanks!

And yes indeed, a few 5.0L V8's in the neighborhood would certainly be the envy of those boxer engine boys!

Given the hard times in the NASCAR community, this would probably be a good time to buy in the better areas around Charlotte.

Very true, Wally...however, anything is better than the housing prices here!

I've been looking around in our preferred areas and the asking prices are very reasonable

That's because everyone from the North Shore is moving here to my block in Plainview. Houses are selling for exactly what they were in 2006 when we bought -phew!

I'm in Ballantyne, great area. Close to evrything, good public & private schools, close to EuroWerks and Porsche dealership. I'll be happy to show you around if you need any help.

I was informed Loren does excellent work... a bit pricey and he's very, very busy. Could take a lot of time.

Also informed that Scott Jaguar (go figure) does fine work.

I am waiting on a couple of more referrals, as my guy is sourcing work for a 911.

....there's a reason he's busy. In body/paint work the statement "you get what you pay for" is most times true. It is in this case. Loren is the best in my book and I'm EXTREMELY picky!

Not many of those guys live IN Charlotte (Jeff Gordon's ex lives a few blocks from my home but I wouldn't recognize her if she ran over me.... ). Most are North in the Mooresville area on Lake Norman and around where quite a few race teams are based.

Absolutely!

But given Mark's specifics of "good paint guy" that "doesn't charge outrageous prices" and wanting to have it done by SITM 2010, and not knowing the present condition or end goal... that's why I pointed out those things.

If he is wanting to achieve the levels of perfection that exemplifies Kermit or your GTS, I would suggest starting now and plan for SITM 2012 or 2013...

At least he can arrive in Charlotte with a list of recommended painters and do some shopping amongst that list.

I would hope that even in 5 months Loren could get almost any type job done???? He might be a little slow but he ain't that slow.....

Mark, what are you having painted? Whole car or just parts of it?

BTW, welcome to North Carolina. You said "back" to NC; did you live here b/f?

Exactly, Barry...I want a nice paint job done by someone who knows what they are doing - like when I tell them not to take it down to bare metal because the car already has the best primer available under the paint, and they guy won't argue with me and tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about...

The car is in average shape, runs extremely well - she just needs paint...if I were doing a complete frame-off I would be willing to spend $8000-10,000 on paint and wait 2-3 years for the rite painter, but I want to drive my shark! it will not be going to Pebble Beach, you know?

Arriving with a list of good painters who aren't going to see a Porsche and add $2000 off the bat is exactly what I'm looking for

Thanks again, Barry...keep me posted

Hi Chuck, the whole car is in need of a respray, as it was not stored indoors its whole life...once that gets done and I have the dash recovered it will be a very nice shark. I'm going to remove all of the trim, lights, etc so the painter will only have to remove the bumpers, sand, and paint. However I would like to have this car ready before SITM, or at least by mid-summer...

Thank you for the welcome back! I did my undergrad work at UNC, and then I lived in Wrightsville Beach for about 5 years before returning to NY for grad school...all of my closest friends are still either in Wilmington or Charlotte, and as such I have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to return!

-Mark
