[QUOTE=linderpat;7238756]So you think the Bleumax is only worth $5K? There was a feeding frenzy here last spring when it went up for sale. It's easily worth twice that amount, and I have no doubt I could get it. Here's the car - Link: http://www.928registry.org/1978-928-0834.htmQUOTE]

At the price of $7900 shown for the blue car I would say that I didn't miss the value by much for a similar car. We have been talking about a 78 with substantially more miles than the blue one had. I think that makes up at least $2900 of difference especially in an event you call a "feeding frenzy." Five figures is a stretch unless you are counting the dollar sign. But that's only my opinion.

I hastily started thread about this car but should have kept it here. I was wondering why this car has not sold in a year.

Bower, I feel compelled to give you my philosophy about someone in your position, as I see them. Many of us own 928's because we like Porsches and because we cannot or do not want to pay what it would cost to buy many of the other Porsche models available. We have bought a 928 mainly because they did not hold their value, so they are inexpensive, relatively speaking. Then of course we become addicted to them in such a way that they are the very best car that Porsche ever made. Then we try to convince ourselves that it is other way around.

So, here comes someone like maybe you who sees what we see in getting a whole lot of great Porsche car for not so much money. However, the problem is that finding one that is all sorted out is going to be very very rare. That's because like most used cars they are being sold because they are worn out in various respects and/or the maintenance has been eating up the seller.

What it boils down to is you are not likely to find a well sorted out car. If you do it is going to be at the upper end of the price range and perhaps in the relative rare category of the Blumaxx they are talking about. Those cars just don't go up for sale.

What you haven't told us about yourself which would help us give you more complete advise, is what your interest or ability might be to fix up a car yourself. Do you have tools? Do you have a place to work. Are you a gearhead like the rest of us? If you aren't going to be into fixing one of these up for yourself, it wont matter how much the car needs, the cost of getting someone else to do it for you is going to eat you up.

On the other hand, if you simply have a passion for the 928 and even the 78 model, and you have unlimited cash available or nearly so, find one that is complete and as nice as you can afford and then start throwing money at it until it meets you expectations. The rest of us do that but instead of throwing money at them so much, we throw ourselves at them and enjoy the good feeling of a job well done and the opportunity to drive a very nice and well maintained Porsche.

I suspect that if you are not going to be doing your own work or most of it and you are looking at a $5000 or less price 928. you are simply making a big mistake. You will not be happy with any 928 you can afford.

But, then what the heck do I know?

well here's the thing on the 928s. Its less about the label than it is about the concept. The idea of a ultra fast, smooth, comfortable and solid GT car has me transfixed by the 928. I do like and am considering other cars, but the 298 is for me (and surely all of you) the gold standard. 80's Corvettes, 90s 300zxs some odd coupes here and there all fill a similar roll but none are quite like the Wheeled Lear Jet 928.

When the super 70s GT concept cars were first being penned and built, I was not around yet. I was born in 1974 which was prime time for many car concepts like the 928. see some here for fun...

http://www.lotusespritturbo.com/Supercars.htm

Early/mid 70s automotive design expressed the concept of transportation with an optimism gone in today's world of fluffy formless rides that break for you, tell you where to go, call Onstar for you etc. etc. etc.

As far as maintenance, I do most of my own work on the cars and bike I own. I understand that the 928 is a complicated machine, but it is only that. I have the shop manual PDF set and don't think I'd be too intimidated to try anything. It would not be a DD and could bo out of commision for repars if need be.

Once you see a few "nice" cars, you will realize how far away some of these projects are from nice.

If you buy a 928 based on low price, you will likely regret it. You need to know what you like, and buy what you like.

By the way, the 85 928 that I originally referred you to on eBay closed out for $8300. That might have been one of the best deals of the year. It looked to me like every bit as good if not better than the Blumaxx they are talking about. That could very well be the kind of 928 you should be watching for.

P.S. And I am sure it had its own issues, just not as obvious as the red over green car.

And that Meteor Metallic / Marine Blue car was purchased by someone on this board, I will let them tell the tale, definitely a good score
