A $5k respray 79 would have to be in amazing condition, and I don't mean the odometer looks nice.

Default Well Here are the pics

Bad Stuff:

AC not working despite ads claim to have A/C owner says he put r134 in the system and it "disappeared" but worked while in the system. I always thought you had to do a conversion to the system to accept 134 though have never done it.

Paint separation...I was skeptical about the repaint and now I know why. The paint along both sides of the body is separating from the textured bit under the doors.

Paint spray on top of window rubber. Small amounts of red visible but enough to indicate windows were likely not removed for the "5K" paint job. In owner's defense these are supposedly the po's claims.

Torn rear CV boot on one side.

Emissions mystery. The car is NOT registered in my state and has as far as I know never been smogged. This mystery could easily be solved by owner getting it smogged though.

Good Stuff: Interior, ran well, looks great other than stupid paint cracks. 85K, 5 speed.

So my question to you all is what would you pay for this car? When I left, I was thinking If it were something I'd buy, the fist number in the price should be a "2" but did not want to offend the owner who seems to like his ride and thought I needed to think a bit, though I have a feeling I should probably avoid it all together.

I'd be insulted with a 2K offer for that car. Many have a/c issues, that to me is not a big deal. Torn boot is another common issue and easily remedied by you or your shop. Can't speak to the smog aspect, don't have that here in Montana - could it be exempt?
As to the paint, it's a respray of a 30+ year old car, so I would expect some issues, but the pics look fine as a DD IMHO. The interior looks very good for its age, and the engine bay looks pretty clean too (except for the unstrapped air cleaner strap - the air cleaner probably needs replaced at this point - $20 item). It even has the original intake tubes, which are no longer available, and they don't appear cracked or crumbling from the photo. Also, I fully agree with James regarding the timing belt.
I'd get a ppi on things like the engine compression, tranny smoothness, and the big items. 4 or 5 K for that car does not look unreasonable to me if everything checks out. It's a first year example, and there is value in that.

$2-3k. Like said above, the old TB and now no AC and torn boot really scream no mx for a long, long time. You could get lucky and it's just simple stuff that can be taken care of for < $1k, or it could be a nightmare that will take every hour and dollar you have.

Keep shopping over $3k unless you are really set on this. I understand the repaint, and the rocker covers being cracked. It's a fairly easy fix. Meh, could go either way. I would spend $5k on it as it sits.

$2500 Max for this car; and if you can't do a lot of the work on it yourself, I would walk away from it. You can have $5000 in work done on it and it still wont be worth much over $3500. (That's not counting a new paint job.)

Take my advise and let it go!!!!!!!

Well, the interior looks really good. It could have LSD as well, I think a lot of early manual cars did, and that makes for tossable fun. Aluminum balljoints probably, those would need replacing. To me, fixing the mechanics is easier than fixing the interior. I see potential... what color was it originally?

As for T-belt... no worries on a 4.5L engine. If it breaks you will have to get the cam timing right again and put a new belt on... no big deal at all! That said, it would SUCK to be in the middle of nowhere and have the belt break and strand you! So, replace the belt, but don't worry to much about it breaking...it won't hurt anything.

It could EASILY be a $5k car... Interior needs to be SUPERIOR and the repaint needs to be AWESOME, but other than that if it seems to run well and in particular if the A/C is working, man I think $5k would be fun times!
Man...$5k for a well sorted OB. Depressing....This is why I'll never sell my '79.

The car was green originally. I did not see evidence of green anywhere. I do not gunk the chipping paint is rust related. Are the rockers not Aluminum? I agree that a 2k offer for this car woul be mean, but no meaner than the 5k ask. The interior was awesome and if he got the ac working, I'd be re-tempted but not without a considerable price adjustment.

Looking at the interior, that is where you could put a ton of money in your's looks great. Do you do your own work, if so parts for a compressor, hoses etc for your air should not exceed $800.00. This would be replacing most of the system chances are it would be a lot less. Belt hoses fuel lines preventative maintenance $500. A lot of painters don't take the time to prep the sills, they don't want to sand off the coating so the paint flakes off. This can be repaired for $125.00 per side due to a brake line on the panels.
Car looks good so expect to drop 2K into fixing all the little things so make him an offer. I would start at $3,500 and bail out at $4250.00. I would share with him the cost to bring it up to DD condition and find some comparable values and haggle.
Good luck
