Skip the parade (do they even allow 928's there? ) - head 3 hours further north to Road America for one of those events.

There are even a few GTG's in the Milwaukee area for 928 owners. I'm chatting with a couple of Chicago residents about hosting a GTG down there too.

I'm game to go anywhere...

I don't care where as long as there's Porsche's, beautiful women, food and lots of roads to drive!

This is my first Porsche so... before I get to drive it I have to build it... a bit *** backwards... but least when it breaks down I know it inside out right! So don't know where the good shows are or what to do yet!

Point me in the right direction!

I'd yank that engine. Getting the cam towers back on will be so much more pleasant.

Did I miss this one?

I've re-used them unless they look crappy or I feel like spending the money. The washers look like they yield a bit, which is surprising. Studs are really pricey and hard to get out.

I guess I learned some thing, you can get the heads off with studs.

Two valve cars are easy to get the heads off, while in the car...especially from where he is at...

I'd never, ever, ever attempt to pull heads off of a 32 valve car with studs....that's just nuts. There is no easy way to do it...A/C lines need to move, etc...and that's the easy side! The first 32 valve engine I ever did any major work to came to me in boxes. The passanger head was off and the driver head loose, but not off. The car looked like a theft recovery, from trying to get the heads off in the car.

BTW...I've never seen anything in the Porsche literature about replacing head washers....I've never used new ones. However, the nuts are not re-usable....that's everywhere in Porsche's information.

Ok, maybe I have the washers and nuts mixed up
Honest mistake.....

Personally I would never pull the heads of a 32V stud motor in situ myself. Just saying I know it's possible.

If you are going to pull the heads I would just pull the motor, it is soooo much less hassle. And pulling the motor is quick and easy.

Josh make sure you open the block drains as you still have 2 gallons of coolant in the block do this before you loosen the head bolts to keep coolant out of the cylinders

Personally, I would replace the water pump and timing belt as you already have the belt off--and service the rollers, tensioner, etc. I would also pull the heads--and then have 'em planed & cleaned.

I did my head gaskets with the engine in my car on the 84. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever done, but looking back, I would have pulled the engine and did the pan gasket and motor mounts at the same time. I also did a lot of "while I'm in there stuff" like getting the injectors cleaned/flowed, new rubber hoses on everything--to include fuel lines, plug wires, etc. It was a great feeling knowing that when it was done, it was done right and I wouldn't be going "back in" anytime soon. If you don't do your heads, I don't think you're going to have that feeling. My $.02...

Good luck and post pics!

Advice please!
I bought an S4 burn-motor with 80k miles on it and after cleaning the outside of the block up, I decided to pull the heads to have them rebuilt. Good thing I did; the heads themselves had what looked like chunks of green salt growing from their surface, and here's what the head-gaskets looked like, not pretty at all:

Ok... well...

I pulled the motor... you're right. Quick n easy. 45 minutes. I already had removed the majority of it! The engine mounts literally fell apart.

Stan: I don't know where the block drains are... Once I pulled the engine I rotated it over on my stand and drained out as much as possible.

Almost everything has been down to the powerwash... yuck... filthy and nasty

I can see where my headgaskets look to be weeping between cylinder 2/3... so it's a good thing I changed my mind. As for the head studs.... I need to purchase the nuts... but as for the washers???? I'm guessing no?

What's the torque sequence on the heads.... I have not pulled them yet as I do not have that piece of information!!!

Good man! Now shave the heads to bump the compression a bit
