Powder coating... thoughts?

OK... indecision is over. exactly what I want to do.
how did you get the Porsche Crest done?
I have already pulled the plenum during a major refresh on my 84. debating PC.. so tonight the legs come off too. now that I am in this deep, maybe I should also pull the cam covers too.
what started as a plan to replace the old fuel lines keeps morphing.

I am going to have to arrange an alternate parts delivery location. my wife (aka CFO) is getting concerned about the continuing stream of boxes arriving.
forgot to mention the parts for my 911 track car too.

uggh... the cam covers were a total delight!!!
What a pain in the ***... They weren't terrible... but man... Those aren't ever coming off again unless the motor comes out for head gaskets. Wow that adds significant time to the disassembly process! I was really worried about stripping them... so I was extremely careful.
I need to find the 4" version of the allan/socket combo... Mine is too long which made the tight spots really difficult.
On a side note... how do you get the cam out of the cover?? Or do you just leave it in for powder coating? I've got the covers/gears off, and the seals out of both ends... just couldn't figure out how the cam came out?
The crest was just glued on.. a little screwdriver and a heat gun will pop that sucker right off! I used the tattered hood crest and knocked the tabs off the back... it was just setting on the intake for the picture... I will replace it with a new crest... I will scuff the powder coat, and stick it on with some good adhesive!

in full disclosure, my wife is very frugal. it is because of her I am not in debt up to my eyeballs. we've been married 31 years, it took her the first 10 to influence my borrow/spend tendancies learned from my parents. so I indulge myself with old cars/bike but paid for. actually not bad since I enjoy tinkering almost as much as driving..... almost.

what crest did you use? looks like a very good size match. I was considering not having the crest PC'ed. then hand paint in the colors and clear. I did this on my 911's center caps and just stripped/repainted for second time. concerned it would not hold up on the engine. the other thought was to polish the high edges of the crest and then just paint the inlay areas in gloss black high temp engine paint. I did this when I restored my CB1100F engine, looks as good as PC. I have painted the crest inlay area on my 928's stock rim's in black. but the real creast would be the best for the engine.
and thanks for discouraging me from the cam covers.... between the evolving projects on the 928 and the 911 work, I am on the verge of overloading my time available to wrench. I want to get both done before 4/1.

I wanted to match the gold and black in the powder with the crest... to really bring out some details!!! More pieces coming soon! This is getting expensive... please help! I'm addicted to this car... The vw can sit in the driveway for the rest of the year! I want this one running and spitshine clean!!!

That job looks beautiful. Did it cost you twice as much for the powder basecoat followed by the clear powder? I may be tearing down my engine soon and this is something I have considered doing for a while

Typically the powder cost would be doubled yes... but that also depends on what terms you are with your powdercoater... I've got three cars in progress so I get a pretty good deal!!
As for the cam... I figured out how to get it out myself... you have to pull those cam follower slides out to release the cam from it's bearings... What an involved process those are...
I'm equally excited to get the covers back. They are going to look so nice! The cover gasket was leaking onto the header as well... so all new seals for the cam covers will be ordered...
Roger the list is getting long!!! Once the last cover is off and powdercoated. I will place my order. Most likely this friday! So the re-assembly and degreasing can continue.

FWI you can remove the studs on the hood crest with soldering gun a little bit of heat and they fall off ,
Dont use too much or you can damage the enamel on the front

I paid about $150 to have my 16V intake / runners powder coated & cleared.
I also ground off all the seams on each runner and down the middle of the plenum. Talk about a royal PIA.

I paid $240, for all intake pieces, fuel rails, and cam covers... Blasted, powdercoated, and cleared.
I ground off the seams on the top of the runners (forget the bottom!!), but left the one on the center piece.. b/c it flowed with my idea!
My powder was not a smooth coat so I just hit the seams with the grinder, and then knocked out all the scuffing with a 150 grit on the polisher. Took 45 minutes... Polishing them like my vr6 intake... HELL no never again... I've spent hours behind sanding blocks and the polisher...
I considered the hea b/c it looked like a soldered piece, but didn't want to chance ruining the crest for the pic... so wire cutters, and a grinder did the trick in 30 seconds or less! Crest is all pitted anyway! Has no place on a fresh car! Great desk ornament tho!

Got my cam covers back finally... along with a couple boxes of other freshly powdercoated goodies!.
FYI that's frost in the bottom right corner... it was a bit cold this morning.
The rear caps are gloss black... cheap and nobody ever sees them anyway. The end caps for the timing covers are matched to the cam cover.

make sure to wash out the insides of the cam housing with hot water and engine gunk or detergent soap there can be blasting materials in there that will foul the oil passages and thus ruin the lifters/ cam bearings.
